e87 120d. Which years did they use the M47?
Discussion
I'm going to buy a 120d within the month and I'm aware there were some issues with the timing chain on the N47 engine. I'm keen to avoid this potential issue completely by getting a car fitted with the M47 engine. Im aware it's a touch less powerful but I'd rather have peace of mind than the extra 14bhp. It's nothing a remap can't fix anyway.
Does anybody know which year the M47's stopped and the N47's started?
Am I being overcautious in my approach?
Hope somebody can help.

There is hundreds if not thousands of M47 2.0d engines on the roads. Most will have been owned at some time in its life by a company car driver. The vast majority of these company car drivers will have no sympathy for the turbo or even know a turbo needs warm up and cool down periods, due to this some have failed prematurely. Because its on forums ( same as swirl flaps) its become a forum common problem.
Reality is, if one has been looked after, had adequate cool down warm up times, regular oil changes, upgraded vortex oil breather the turbo will be fine. Mines done 7 yrs 80k no problem. Same as the swirl flaps, which are now in the garage, but I only removed them because the vacumn control pump failed disabling the flaps requiring a new complete manifold. ( much easier to remove the pump and flaps, the flaps were in perfect condition, not gunged up, no loose parts)

I did warm down warm up ,I did get the oil changed AS SPECIFIED by BMW ,mine as with many others went (90k). I have been told that if I had changed the oil between BMW condition services I may have been ok ,however when i challlenged BMW over that they basically said I was talking nonsense.
There are many cars out there wetpaint to choose from and many dont include BMWs 2 ltr diesel which is a good thing.

Panda thanks for being a reasonable poster ,that is great the art of manners on forums is dying.
i had a long chat with BMW about this and they were adamant that their oil will last between services but every independant mechanic i have mentioned this to all said their services which can run into 18000 miles is crazy and they are all at it extending services for marketing perposes.

No problem, threads die off very quickly for me when smart arse idiots, with their non witty quips, and , well just crap, appear.
Personally I think BMW, even with their millions of pounds of funding in r+d dept got it a bit wrong here. I think they specified the 2 year xxxxx amount of miles oil change just looking at the engine and not the blower that uses the same oil.
I fully accept it can be a weak point on these cars, but i think it can be managed better, at extra cost with more oil changes.
It could be some cars crud up more than others. Last year when I had to dismantle the flap control ( flaps stuck partially closed when the pump went= loss of power) I was quite surprised at how non gunged the flaps were. I also took off the egr valve and that took 10 minutes to clean out, it only had the slightest of gunge build up in it. I've seen far worse looking flaps and egr valves on forums with less mileage.
Upto now, mines been a good one, it's only had to have the hydro pump for the abs/dsc gubbins done as repair work.
I do tend to maybe over maintain sometimes, before this car I had a 300tdi defender that I offroaded. It had new oil every 6000 miles or 6 months. Diff oils dropped, gearbox oil dropped, transfer box oil dropped every 12 months. If I waded it deep I dropped the diff oil out anyway to make sure no water that maybe got in through the seals could do any damage. Fuel and air filter every 12 months, never wanted for anything. Ran it for 5-6 years and never a breakdown. Very anal servicing but I kept all the receipts and sold it for quite strong money and in a few days.( albeit I did start losing the turbo at 125k, getting quite a bit of whistle from it so swapped it out for a recon before it went pop)
With the BMW the only thing I really do more than the specified service is the oil and air filter. Good cars to be fair, just a shame some owners have been let down following bmws extended service requirements. Greater shame they get, at times unfair treatment from BMW. Although in saying that, with mine at 7yrs old and 80k, I would expect zero help from BMW if my turbo popped. Have to suck it up and pay( not a pun) at an Indy.
