Pictures of used and abused car components

Hi all,

A friend of mine has just sent me this picture which seems to be circulating FB.



And it got me wondering what pictures and accompanying stories the PH masive might like to share as it never fails to amaze me how how much abuse a vehicle can get (especially amazed when people don't notice stuff like the picture above).

The fresh metal on the vanes tell a different tale. That and it looks to have been wearing the vanes down as well.

I'm inclined to agree - that wear is fresh. Either someone's a complete moron (sadly more likely), or it's a fake.

How have the vanes been worn down in areas that aren't touched by anything, let alone the pads , especially near the hub ?

Surely the pad would've "gripped" in to one of the veins and locked the wheel up long before this could've happened? Happy to be proven wrong, just my thoughts

Good point, I'd like to think it's a fake as surely the noise from that would be unbearable...and no one is that stupid surely...surely?

What's the stoke of a typical brake caliper piston?

The pad pad itself has obviously worn away plus half of a vented disc, so about 8mm?
That must be total of around 15mm of material thickness gone?

It's quite believable really, the pad looks like its turned in the calliper also.

Plus look at the track rod end boot! Hardly a loved car lol

No, would just skim over the top, a lot of force at work, path of least resistance, shocking really.

+1, the track rod end looks quite well lubed if a little worn too but even people with the most lax approach to car maintenance would have seen that through the spokes of almost any wheel, unless it was a steelie with trims.

Looks fake as the vanes are worn all the way along their length whereas the brake pad doesn't look as though it reaches that far in. Also, if there should be an outer disk on those vanes then that's probably the best part of a centimetre of wear - wouldnt the caliper pistons have pushed the pad in much further, it looks as though it hasn't been pushed in at all and that the disc has been pushed outward.

Sliding type caliper, no pistons on the outside.

Also, with worn out pads and the disk down to half it's thickness, the piston in the caliper would have fallen out by then?

Looks more like the disk is lathed off...

I had a customer (mobile mechanic) in my shop asking for replacement discs and he was holding a disc just like that... Whilst unbelievable, clearly there are idiots that can continue to drive with horrendous grinding noises!!!

Of course it's from a car that was in use, look at how shiny the edges of the vanes are. I suspect you would be pretty shocked to know just how common it is for morons to present their car to garages in this condition.

Unless you are driving an HGV there won't be anything like 10mm of solid disk either side of the vanes, it is closer to half that,
