Why do people hide their number plate in photos?

I don't know. Can we see a picture of your number plate/plates so that we can maybe stalk you or come around in the dead of night and shout BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO through your letter box. I have wondered this to but I can think of a few reasons...
- you could search for a picture of the same make/model/colour and make clone plates for eg stealing petrol, avoiding congestion charge, speeding fines to name a few.
- you can search a number plate to establish if a car is taxed/mot/insured and establish potential tax/ insurance fraud see the "listed as a ^%&%^* thread on here!!!!!"
- insurance companies have been known to peruse forums to find pictures of cars they insure and spot undeclared modifications, evidence of poor driving etc
- Likewise the police do the above and can & will prosecute as 10penceshort has demonstrated to us all this is real!

Pretty well covers it I think. I certainly have heard of cloning going on and in common with many scams it seems to be on the increase. I have never had the concerns but I can understand the attitude. Sadly crookery has become a widespread concern on the WWW as the WWW has grown. Thanks for the answers. It seems somewhat paranoid to me especially as a number plate is stuck prominently on every car, we even have threads on PH where pics are taken of strangers cars and posted for all to see. Should this stop then?
Your opinions and other facts about you, together with any forum user names, are not pasted on the outside of your car. It's one way of helping to keep an internet identity separate from the real world.steve singh said:

Biker actually hit his car....however, just prior to accident, 10ps had lost control on a bend and came to a standstill just in time for biker to hit him. Total accident, but a lesson to us all. Full write up with insight from 10ps on here somewhere. is quite hard hitting, and would make you reconsider your driving to a degree.He's a very honest chap.steve singh said:

Those two things are not mutually exclusive. Many accidents (including this one) are both. He published a blog type thing about his experiences online. It's worth a read - it's quite a sobering reminder of what can go wrong and the effects it can have on all involved.
