Anyone remeber the 200 bhp club?

A number of years back probably the 90s, people were proud to be in the '200 bhp club'.Cossies, RS turbos and many other cars hit that magic 200+bhp figure.

What would you consider the modern day equivalent of the '200 bhp club' be? Maybe the '400 bhp club'?
What power would you consider something a little special power wise today?

I think most people would consider >200bhp to be still pretty astounding if only because most cooking-class cars are still well below this. Personally 400+ bhp would be something extremely special should I get chance to own something of that ability.

Probably right with the 400 bhp + mark - maybe 450 bhp.

Yes there are lots of cars with less than 200 bhp but a lot with more than that.
Given a modern 2,0 diesel is 180 bhp - I dont think 200 bhp is special at all.

I've had an E46 M3 (over 300bhp) a relatively common performance car, I've also had the E39 M5 also a very attainable car for reasonable money? (400 bhp), even my current fairly common E60 530i has 258bhp. BHP north of 200bhp is certainly very easily attainable for little money.

I wonder what my CLK 320cdi (225bhp variant, 6.7 to 60) would do against a stock Sapphire Cosworth, esp with the 504Nm of torque on tap!

Not really comparable. the cars the OP is talking about were a long way from the fastest things available at the time. I suppose they'd be comparable with things like the Focus RS and the M135i today; maybe the M3 at a push.

Things still have to be fairly special to hit 200mph, even now (although I guess that's partly because so many cars are limited).

Being the Cossie weighs less, I don't think the gap would be as big as you imagine

140bhp in a 2L tdi Passat feels quite lively. Ive got a 225bhp TT that is very lively but when forced near the redline through the gears absolutely comes alive. I wouldn't say no to 3 or 400 +bhp but realistically the only thing Id like it in is an Aston. Porsches and Ferraris do nothing for me and neither do M5s or XJRs which its wasted on.
It all depends what car the power is in.

Maybe tossers were, but most ppl didn't care. Given as how you appear to be referring to just some st Fords though, then yes I can imagine plenty of the Ford chavs club were "proud".
