Around £450-500 ish depending on area for DAS. £90 ish for CBT and I think £15 for theory test.

Bikes depending on how much you have to spend 3k will egt you a very nice bike. 6k will get you a better one

Insureance is gonna be expensive. I went 3rd only party for the first 2 years. depends if you want to risk it.

Dont forget gear! I spent around £1200 on leathers helmet etc etc. It can be done cheaper though.
I recomend you buy a bike mag Ride for example and check out the adverts.

Nice one for getting a bike although I don't recommend a sports for your first bike. (That's how a lot of accidents happen).

Your best bet is to buy something like a Bandit 600. Ok, it's not the fastest bike around but its built like a brick, ultra reliable, doesn't cost much to run and insure and it can still out-do a Porsche or Ferrari at the lights.

For a really nice example, expect to pay about £2300 and then as mentioned before, buy a good helmet (circa £300), and some decent clothing. I personally use Gortex as I ride my bike all year round and it's easier to clean, waterproof, warmer in winter and more practicle but that's up to you.

Other good starter bikes are maybe a Ducati Monster 600 (not very reliable), Suzuki SV650 (can be expensive), or if you really want to get a sports bike maybe a VFR400 but be careful when buying these as there is a lot of crap examples lying about.

Let us know what you end up buying and good luck in your test.

I've just done this so I'll stick in my tuppence worth

DAS was 450quid including CBT, and practical test. Theory test was extra, can't remember how much but 30 quid rings a bell. The CD is also a good idea for practice @ 15 quid.

Kit cost me about 800 or so. You could go more or less but personally I decided to go middle of the road but get good quality stuff.

Bike, just got a 1996 CBR600 (see other thread), (90bhp, the bandit for my test was 80). Bike and insurance was a little over 2k
Can't give any comments on the bike yet as I'm still waiting for my cover note but it seems to be very sweet for it's age.

Your budget is up to you. You could quite easily spend a lot more or less than me. I was definately tempted when I started looking at some of the machinery in the dealer but I decided that my first bike was going to be relatively cheap (I'm waiting for the new Sprint ST to hit the showrooms!!!!)
