I had an S-Type Jaguar for 5 years. It was petrol and when it started costing me over £200 month in fuel I sold it and bought a Peugeot 407 top of the range coupe. Not as great a drive as the jag, no beautiful interior wooden trim, but a quiet smooth work horse. I drive over 20,000 miles a year. I recently met a new partner and he gave me his SLK250 to try. I am finding it wonderful to drive. I am noticing that I get a lot of attention everywhere. My problem is that it's rather noisy as if the windows are slightly open. Is it the roof? It is really not as quiet as the other cars I have had. Is this a common problem with convertibles? I have never had one before.

Regarding this. I have an SLK, the older shape and haven't noticed this. It's not whisper quiet, but it is a hell of a lot more refined than the MX5s I had before (which is why I changed it).As another person said, I think tyre noise is the loudest noise at speed. If you're getting a noise like a window slightly open that doesn't sound right at all.
Just to qualify my earlier comment. I certainly wouldn't describe the tyre noise as significant, merely that it is the loudest noise at speed (the engine is silent at a steady cruise and the wind noise negligible).
I have low profile 18s on my car. My previous SLK had 16s and the new(er) one isn't noticeably noisier.

I've got a new one and the only significant noise is the (diesel) engine when it's cold. I'm prepared to accept the noise as a worthwhile trade-off for the rather excellent fuel economy. Love it.
I've also the diesel, I agree that when cold it sounds like a diesel, also when accelerating it sounds like a diesel. But at constant speed the engine is very quite, but then typical wind and tyre noise dominate. It's a very good all-round car IMHO.Ari said:
Why would you want to? You have to be outside to put things in to the boot or the fuel tank. 
I would like to have the option. I do often want to pop the boot open without stepping out of the care on school runs and dropping one of the kids off at sleepovers etc. And I do not want anyone else to access my fuel flap. My partner has some dubious "psycho" ex's lol.

Thank for this, I will have that looked at. I have only had the car for two weeks, I have not had the roof down as yet. I am really looking forward to it. That's the downside of 2 seaters, or maybe the upside, carrying the kids in the boot. Are you sure the noise isn't them screaming.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
