A mechanic has told me that there is slight play in the rear wheels on my XJR on standard Pentas, another mechanic is saying they all have some play in them.
Anyone got thoughts on what is acceptable ?

By play I mean rocking the wheel from side to side on the ramp at 12 and 6.

I am thinking of replacing the four UJ's as a precaution anyway....

A small amount of top and bottom movement is normal and is usually caused by free play in the output bearings in the diff. Providing it's a roughly equal amount on both sides and you have no odd noises from the rear then for peace of mind I'd grease the UJs, check or change the diff oil and than not worry about it.

Thanks again Jaguarsteve.
I have a confession, although with mitigating circumstances and unreliable technology.
You will recall I had an issue with a very hard ride, turns out my relatively new Michelin digital tyre inflator gives duff readings.
The tyres were very over inflated. I just thought I 'd double check them last week and the digital readout must have started working properly and read 60psi. Glad I only drove locally and at low speed !,,

I would be getting the hub bearings looked at. This is where the play is coming from. A small amount is fine, but if there is too much then you may well wipe out the rear abs sensors.
