Peugeot 206- Whirring/grinding noise from gearbox?

Hello everyone,
I own an X reg Peugeot 206 1.4 and this morning as I was leaving my drive a whirring noise/ grinding sensation started coming from underneath the car and through the gear stick!
It only happens when the cars moving and in gear, I didn't go far before turning back and limping home for fear of doing more damage. Its not constant but I think it has something to do with the drive train because when I move up the revs the noise becomes more frequent.
The car is pretty much worthless, but I've just had a full service and taxed it and I'm not a big earner so its worth a lot more to me! In light of this I do need to have the cambelt changed soon which is going to be expensive. If anyone has any idea what this could be and how much they think it may cost I would really appreciate the help!
