Vw Golf 1.4 S so far.... Picture Heavy

As many of you know I bought a vw golf 1.4 2000 reg for around 2000£, a lot of people advised me to get the Audi A2 over it. So far I can honestly say that this car engine wise has not given me one problem, which is what I was expecting from Vw quality. However I will put my hands up and say that there have been 1 or two problems, one of which was the dampness on the floor (behind the passenger seat foot well) which was due to the windscreen washer being blocked; according to the forums this is a common problem. Secondly engine light has come on 4 times since purchase and seems to be linked to the clutch. Apart from those little problems the car has passed it MOT with no advisories. So I serviced the car and headed for a road trip to Scotland from my home town of Hertfordshire.
The engine light not being serious as told by the Vw specialist I went forward and drove a total of 1500 miles in 2 days. I even managed to pass the millennium mileage of 99999 which was quite rare for me to see, this being my first v/ high mileage car.
I`d first like to compliment on how stunning Scotland is, the highlands are
This is the secound time to scotland, first being a charity climb to Ben Nevis. We drove up to Liverpool which took a total of 3 and a bit hours and then first thing in the morning drove to Central Glasgow where we stayed the night. As soon as the alarm hit 6am we hit the road to the highlands which took 2 and a bit hours. Then drove back to Watford the same day which took roughly 8 hours to complete.
We drove through Fort William, Glen Etive (007 was filmed), Glencoe, Loch Leven, drove up the A82, A85 and around the A816 then straight back.
This was proper car country and wish I drove in the Dads caterham, the golf was excellent around the corners obviously a lot of body roll but enjoyed it dearly. The car flew around every where and was amazing the whole and just shows that barges the way to go.
This car was wonderful on petrol as well not so much in the town but from Glasgow to Watford in one tank! Bloody hell that's good? Oh and it was really hot there as well, compared to all the flooding down here lol.
Hopefully in 4 months the next plan is to drive to Morocco because road trips are so damn fun!! (Pics to follow)

I have a 2000 A3 which is essentially the same car, albiet with a 1.8L engine. I bought it for half the price but it has done a few more miles and I had to spend a bit of money putting it right (alternator, timing belt, four new tyres, etc).
In the last 14 months I have driven all over the country (including a trip from Manchester to Cornwall in the summer, a trip up to Loch Lomond in January and regular 150 mile trips around the north west) and besides the time the alternator died on my driveway it has been completely dependable.
The thing squeaks and rattles and it’s noisy above 70MPH and it doesn’t have air conditioning and after a 350 mile drive on a sweltering July afternoon I swore I was going to get rid of it but that’s when I kinda’ fell in love with it. It’s so basic that driving still feels like an adventure.

Noo when you turn into Glen Etive there is a single track road for about 8 miles and right at the end there is that magnificent sight. It is a good car, it does the job. However the car is not good for petrol (in town) it drinks it like fish, so im looking to buy a 1.3 diesel Astra or a diesel polo.

Do not buy a diesel for around town driving, it will only lead to problems. Diesels are meant for regular long distance journeys. If you want better fuel consumption around the city, try a Toyota Yaris or Aygo etc
