My dealer has suggested a service plan for my Alfa Giulietta. I do 20,000 miles a year and plan to have the car for at least the next 3 years.

They've suggested a 3 year plan which will include to 3 full services, 3 oil services and a cambelt change at a cost of £1485.00 include parts, labour and VAT. within that they will also carry out bulb replacements and puncture repairs should the need arise.

I can pay £40 per month to spread the cost, this seems like reasonable value to me.

If that is the cost of servicing over the next three years then yes it is a good thing to do as you aren't then hit with the big service bill every year as it is all paid for, however I'm glad I don't have an Alfa as that ain't cheap.

We offer service plans and another advantage is that they are price protected so any price rises that may come into effect over the years aren't pased on to the customer.

Check though if you have to have it serviced at the dealer that you bought the car from, our manufacturer backed service plans don't however our dealer ones do; you wouldn't want to move and then have an issue getting any money back.

It's a dealer plan. My dealer is fantastic, I get very well treated indeed.

Of course they'll treat you well when you throw money at them.

My main issue with it would be what if the dealer goes under or changes franchise? Also how much of a saving is it, have you got the details as to how much those items would cost outside of the plan?

If it could be used at other dealers too, it's a saving which makes it worthwhile compared to just sticking £40 in the bank every month and you're definitely going to have the car that long then I'd say great, go for it.

Doesn't sound like a huge saving, I guess the cost of the cam belt change would be significant.,,,

Yes, I had my 42,000 mile service carried out yesterday at a cost of £400. The cambelt service is about £830 on its own.

I was offered something very similar by VW when I said I do a similar mileage. I declined it, just didnt make sense to me. Plus you pay extra for anything outside of thes sevice plan

I can understand the costs of unscheduled repairs being extra for cars outside of warranty.

Add up the cost of the next three services. If it is more than £1,485 then it is a good deal. If it is less than then it isn't.

I have a service plan on my car. It cost about £100 more than the major service that the car was due at that point (fourth year service) and includes MOTs and free courtesy car (I think they're free anyway but you have to pay for insurance which this includes) so seemed well worth doing as, essentially, it made the next two services free.

It'll most likely me administered by a third party company, ours are, so if the dealer or franchise goes under or changes your money will be safe.

It's in effect 6 services.

I think most of these service plans are administered by a company called EMAC. If the dealer goes bust your money is safe and if you change your mind or sell your car you can get a refund of outstanding monies paid minus an admin fee.

I've done it twice now and while you don't save much, every little helps plus you 'lock in' at today's prices and it spreads the cost so you're not hit with the annual £££ bill. Usually a few extras thrown in like 10% off parts, free MOT when needed, etc.

You seem sure of this service plan you have been offered, I'm confused, are you asking us about it, or telling us about it?

My apologies, I didn't read your original post clearly enough. Same applies though, add up the individual cost of the six services and see what it comes to.

OP, I know you're no stranger to Alfa, and I'm all for service plans if they're right for the motorist, but don't see the cambelt being required within your three year time scale? Assuming you've gone for a diesel (given your annual mileage), cambelt interval is likely to be 4/5 years or 84000 miles, whichever is sooner.

The car is two years old and done 40k, it will need a belt in 2.5 years time at my current mileage.

Yes chaps, apologies if the original post was a little ambiguous I want to get the opinion of others on these plans before it commit.
