W201 - Own Goal or a Blessing in Disguise?

Have been away for the weekend with "The Wife" - during which time a friend of ours lists his car on Ebay. Merc 190D. It's affectionately called 'The Berlin Taxi' and would have done me a marvelous turn for the next year or so. Not wanting to spoil our weekend away with car haggling, I decided to leave it until we returned.
Anyway, snooze you lose. It's gone. I'm absolutely ruddy gutted. I know they're glacially slow and all that, but I'm gutted.
There doesn't seem to be another 2.0D kicking around (which is really what I was after for frugality) and the 2.5d that's on the bay will sell for a lot more than the £700 I'd have got this one for.
SO:
1) can you make me feel better about the whole episode?!!!
2) will a W202 actually make a better prospect at the same price?
3) is there something I'm missing that's quirky and unborkable for a weeks wages?
