Vauxhall Meriva Steering Problems

Wife really really wants an old shape Meriva. I realise its not the car of anyone's dreams but anyway......there are a lot of articles about random power steering failures. Apparently Vauxhall don't think there's a problem and it's virtually undrivable when it happens and I don't want that phone call........
Anyone had experience or know any more?

Don't just don't ...the mk1 meriva is a horrible car, woefully underpowered with aweful pick up, you will see a gap at an island and go for it, but it won't be there by the time the engine picks up revs and actually moves, the steering issue affected several vauxhalls, not just the meriva, the electric column mounted motor locked up, vauxhall would never admit any issue's.

I was certainly put off buying one and ended up with a RenaultModus with some advice from here. Certainly was much cheaper and lower millage, saying that I've just discovered one of the stupid floor cubby holes is wet, rest of the carpet fine, mind you it was almost £2k cheaper than the Meriva I was looking at so I'll live with it, bath sealant and new thick mats night do the trick!
