Am I a complete peasant for wanting my food on a warm plate rather than a cold bit of slate or "rustic" looking piece of wood?

I understand it's presentation, but it's style over substance when hot food should be served on a warm plate.

I've ordered food on the basis it comes on a plate not a plank. Seen people send planked food back to swap for a plate.

A fad which will (thankfully) die out soon. I think the 1st time I was served "dead meat on a plank" was when skiing in Austria 93/94 ish.

Why on earth would you serve warm food on planks or slates? confused

I work in a hotel at the moment, and all hot stuff goes on warm plates and cold stuff is occasionally served on planks. Very strange.

The slates are only used as placemats / costers!

I'm not a fan either. I blame Jamie Oliver who serves all his food on a plank, or even just the table laugh I had lamb chops at one of his restaurants the other week served on a wooden plank.

There is only one thing I like to use a slate for, and that's serving Cheese after dinner, like to write on the slate what the various cheeses are, instead of explaining to all the guests!

I cook my salmon on a Maple plank. You soak the plank overnight and then put it in a very hot oven. Imparts a gentle Maple flavour to the fish.

I eat it off a plate.

Slates are a total waste of time imo. The texture means that half the sauce/purée can't be eaten & they go cold far quicker than plates.
The only other pretension that is a worse crime is the purée spoon swipe. Yeah, it was new about 10 years ago. Now it's just dumb. A dessertspoon's worth of purée smeared thinly 6 inches across a hot plate & surprise surprise it's dry & tasteless. Probably looked alright under the hotplate 5 minutes before it arrived at the table.
