Misophonia - anybody else?
Discussion
Any other genuine sufferers out there!?
I'm 27 now, and since about the age of 20 the family, friends and the girlfriend have taken the piss out of my dislike of noisy eaters. It's only getting worse! It's not a normal dislike, even hatred - it's bordering on the pathological.
I post because I've lost an hour of productivity today as a result of colleagues who, I'm convinced, belong in a zoo and lack even the most basic of manners. From a punnet - nay, a barrel! - of croutons, to crisps, to crunchy salad, all inhaled and no attempt whatsoever made to minimise the noise in what is, otherwise, a very quiet office.
I can't describe how it makes me feel - the nearest I could come is to say it makes me want to scratch my insides out. It burrows into my brain and doesn't disappear until after the event, and often leaves me with a severe headache. Rythmic noises, generally made subconsciously, irritate me beyond reason also, but it's eating that's the worst. Probably because of the rudeness and lack of respect involved.
I should add that although I deserve the ridicule I'll inevitably get here, I am, in virtually every other way, totally normal - whatever that is. But this...
Deliberately not filed under 'Health Matters' because I'm anticipating humorous anecdotes and inconceivably tangential responses concerning same, but do what you must, mods.

You sound broken.

Indubitably so! It's believed the cause is the result of abnormal connections in the brain - I am, literally, broken! HTH

Bluebarge - many people can eat crisps just fine - I don't mind a bit of noise, so long as somebody is making the effort not to physically disgust people around them. It's the ridiculously loud crunching I can't handle.

You're not alone at all. Tea slurpers, people that chew with their mouths open, noisy crisp eaters. All of them should be put down, without exception. There should be a law.
I'm glad! I thought I was alone until somebody with it mentioned it one day. Was at least happy it had a name. Also crusoe - yes, I've thought about it for a long time but today is the final straw.
This sounds exactly like my girlfriend...
She gets really worked up by it, seriously worked up. Her reaction to somebody eating noisily or with their mouth open is the same reaction somebody would give to reading the Ian Watkins case notes. She appears physically disgusted and has to leave the room.
She works in an office where two people near her eat very loudly and she has got some worked up she has considered quitting her job! I just assumed she was bats
t mental; seems it is a real condition...

Exactly! That sounds like misophonia. I had to leave my desk and sit in the kitchen earlier She gets really worked up by it, seriously worked up. And make a phonecall that really didn't need to be made.Allaloneatron said:
I also hate people eating with their mouths open. Closed however is a different matter. What can be done about that? I wouldn't stop anyone eating what they wanted to eat (unless its bloody stinky). OP are you totally silent while you eat?
People always use that argument, but it falls down in two regards, in my view:a) I can't really hear myself eat anyway. But regardless, I do all I can to minimise noise when eating in public. To me, that's common decency.
b) Lack of total silence doesn't annoy me. As I mentioned above, it's ridiculously loud eating that annoys me.

Do you hating people watching you eat? I'm not talking about somebody staring at you intently like a psycho, but do you feel a bit uncomfortable with people looking at you when you eat?

Interesting question, and I suppose the answer is yes, but not horribly so. I would say no more than perhaps is normal, for something that does require manners to avoid offence! I am unduly concerned with minimising the noise I make while eating, though.Do you hating people watching you eat? I used to be severely misophonic and still get the occasional bout where I have to leave the room (particularly if someone is really attacking an especially crunchy apple which they fear may escape if not dealt with as harshly as possible), but it seems to have diminished significantly since I changed jobs and eliminated a lot of the work-related stress that I suffered. I have no idea if there is actually a causal link between stress and misophonia, but there are several stories of similar experiences out there.
Hallelujah brother!
I can normally stand one noise as long as I can do something to distract myself and see that it will end shortly. The trough-scraper who used to sit near me, however, would stretch a single packet of crisps out to half an hour, both crunching and chewing with her gob wide open, then loudly slurp her fingers to 'clean' them and casually reach for a packet of sweets. I spent a lot of time with big headphones on
I get that eating will make a bit of noise, but cannot understand why people consider it acceptable to chew with their mouths wide open.
