Tyre Longevity (in a good way)
Discussion
I am just about to replace 2 front tyres on my Jaguar XJ8 (2003 Aluminium body).
They are almost, but not quite down to the tread wear indicators, but close and I have a slow puncture in one so seems a good time to do it.
Any the point of this post is that I bought this car in March 2010, with 40k on the clock. It now has almost 110k on it, and these tyres (Pirelli) were put on by the previous owner on August 2009. Unfortunately they didn't put the mileage on, but even at average mileage they must have done about 75k....Which I think is quite remarkable.
I'm very happy with that. I am guessing it it is the lightweight aluminium construction of the car that helps.
How does that fare with other PH'ers ?

That's some mileage. Those tyres aren't driven though which will have increased their lifespan over the front tyres on a FWD car. I suspect someone's FWD rear tyres, neither being driven nor steering, might have made it even further.
As a little contrast I once wore out a pair of Yokohama A520s in about 4000 miles.

On the other hand, in the early 1960s I had a pair of Michelin X on the rear wheels of my Mark 1 Sprite, and they lasted for about 86,000 miles. I was amazed, but it was front engine (43 bhp) and rear wheel drive, so not a lot of power could be applied to the driven wheels. As a little contrast I once wore out a pair of Yokohama A520s in about 4000 miles.
I used to get high mileage out of Goodyear NCT5s fitted to my Vectra C - 30k on the front and 50k on the rear. Similar rep to the P6000s though. Since no longer having a motorway commute I have switched to Uniroyal Rainsport 2.
The XJ8 (X308) I've recently purchased had a new set of P6000s fitted all round in 2008 @ 44k - to replace the factory original P4000s. The car has only done 12k since then and they still have 6mm left all round so MANY years and miles left! They feel OK on this car at the low 'comfort pressures' though.

I got an average of 25k miles from a set of conti sport contact's on the front of my Astra sporthatch 1.7 cdti, the rears (original) still had 6mm after 70k miles, swapped them to the front and they did another 20k before getting swapped over when I picked up a puncture.
Not bad for a 'sport' tyre

Obviously driving style is a big influence...
Yes, this is a Motorway cruiser, and spends it's life either in the fast lane, or City Centres. Not too many country lane, back end out adventures (Got a Suzuki Cappuccino for that). My previous XJ6 (X300, but same as X308) I reckoned on about 25k a set.

Apparently it's not impossible to get over 100k miles out of a set of BFGoodrich All Terrain tyres, only hearsay though.
Yeh, my mates brother did over 100k miles on one set of tyres on his defender, but then the tread is a lot bigger than standard car tyres. I'll probably change them before next winter though because the rubber seems to have hardened which has ruined their snow/ice performance!
A similar story to the OP from me. My '07 3 series has the same tyres on it as when I bought it four years ago with 54k on the clock. I've now done 95k and they've still got lots of tread left. I don't hang about and have opposite lock fun every single time I drive it! I use winters for three months of the year, but barely drive it in winter, so I reckon they've done at least 40k miles and will probably run to over 50k.
ETA: They're the standard fit Continentals.

Funny this has come up.
Recently bought an 08 Saab 9-3. Plenty of tread on the tyres. Was driving home today and got flashed by the car behind, turned out I had a rear flat. Took it off, and found 2 big holes (almost big enough to get your finger in) and a crack almost fully 360 degrees around the inside shoulder!! Scary amount of damage. Turned out it's the original rear tyre, 50k miles and 6 years old. I changed both rears to be safe (£££ ouch). Never experienced it before but will be checking manufacture dates on tyres from now on. 5 years is my new limit!
(Conti Sport Contacts too, so wasn't some cheap Dingaling Beijing special.
Check your dates guys

Well, controversially no doubt, I'll be replacing mine with Korean Kumho's.
They are far from "Ditchfinders" and I have been happily using these for the last twelve years, had them on several Jags, my Wifes' C5, and our Jeep Cherokee.
I have been quite impressed by the ride, handling & price (although not that cheap anymore)...and now I find they have a lifetime accidental damage guarantee !
Happy days
