Sapphire cosworth or Porsche 944 s2 convertible

Sapphire cosworth all of the way, 2 wheel drive of course but the reason being that they are so usable and a rapidly appreciating classic and when tuned they are an absolute hoot to drive. When I sold my 350bhp rear wheel drive Sapphire I was looking for a 944 turbo and I was disappointed by the engines and lack of tuning.

You have to love a Cosworth to want one, ultimately there is a rough old Sierra underneath. but if you hark back to the end of the golden age of touring car racing, then the Cosworth is an Icon, and justifiably so.
The 944 convertible is a pleasant but overweight tourer, with less heritage than a rubber bumper MGB

Take both for a descent drive and see which feels special to you. I've had my 4x4 Sapphire for 15 years and have no intention of letting it go.
I have a friend with a 996 Turbo, which is faster and better built but somehow a Cosworth feels like more of an event. By the same token, I know that these days, people just don't 'get' the whole Cosworth thing.
The two advantages I can think of for the 944 are reliability and the ability to leave it parked up.

If you could go back in time at least 10 years then the decision would be much harder - but in 2013, now that Sierra's have reached the age where they are 20-26 years old and are worn out and rotten or are over priced collectors cars then its a no brainer - the 944.
I say that as a fan of both having owned several versions, but because the 944 is built so much better than the Sierra they are still very good cars and can be used as a daily driver even when 20+ years old (The correct answer by the way is a 944 turbo S not a convertible S2!)

I can't see any attraction in owning a Sapphire. I had one new (F reg) as a company car. Not a Cosworth of course but when picking up my next company car I was taken to the showroom in a dark maroon one ... okay they're quick and handle okay - but to me they just look dull - like a Ford Sapphire in fact!
I've never got the Subaru thing either though - it's a f

So keep the 944 for me (biased anyway) - and maybe buy a Turbo.

Get the Cosworth and people will talk to you about it, especially if you keep it visually standard. The Porsche will probably be treated like just another low rent drug dealer driving some flash, and getting out of busy junctions will be a challenge. Not unlike the Cosworth was 10 years ago really. Then again if I were in the market for a convertible I'd be going for a TVR.

In four years with a 944 Turbo I've never had anyone react badly to it on the streets or not want to let me out of a junction. In general anything much more than about 20 years old doesn't get counted into "status wars". 99% of the general public these days don't even know what a Porsche 924/ 944 / 928 / 968 was any more, they don't recognise the cars at all. To the great unwashed these days a Porsche is a Cayenne, Panamera or something from the Boxster / Cayman era family, or a 911 from 996 onwards.
