Woke up this morning in a hotel room in San Francisco feeling less than top form.
Nearly six weeks into a business trip and can't wait to head home on Friday.
Cell phone constantly ringing and trying to answer questions and at the same time check out.
Then find Wife and Daughter are having a rally bad day with each other (long and difficult story).

It was the final straw and pushed me headlong into a stress attack.
Tight painful chest and short of breath. Sat in a crowded lobby with tears in my eyes trying to talk to my wife.

I had a feeling last week that this was coming.
It's going to last a week.

No good advise here,

But I hope you are feeling better mate.

Find somewhere quiet and chill for a bit. No job is worth your health.

Job/lifestyle change, or else your panic attack with turn into a heart attack one day, and that will be that.

Are you the sort of person that cares too much? Are you supporting a load of idiots at work? Are you the busy guy they give everything to because you just do it?

I'd second that. No work is worth being away from home for 6 weeks unless you really enjoy it. I'd immediately book at least two weeks off and have some time with the family. Life is about enjoying not seeing how many plates you can juggle at once.

I went through a bad stressful episode a couple of weeks ago, turned in to a heart attack. It's not going to happen again, lifestyle changes are the way to go.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the advice.
Actually work with a great team and so work load is not the issue.
In fact I've been able to ease off the peddle the last 4 years and hide out in hotels occasionally.

Love my job and don't really want to change although they added India to my coverage on top of North America. I have found that addition really made me realise my age for the first time in my life.

Where I do need to change is in loosing some weight, getting back into the gym and cutting the drinking.

Had a nice stress relief call this morning. Another £7k ppi refund from NatWest smile
Feel better allready.
Thanks again,
Tony

Having just worked away for a year, I know know how lucky I am with how things evened out with my wife.....i.e if your two thousand miles away bringing home the bacon, you cant do anything about the fight your wife has just had with a child that is firing her through the ceiling. As a decent bloke you will want to. However you just cant. We resolved it, by putting a bit of perspective on things and leaving it until everyone had calmed down and then we talked through the course of action we would take as a couple when I would physically be there to back her up.

Alternatively offer to swop with her so that you can be stretched out in your pj's with a glass of wine cuddling your kids, while she's eight hours from home in a Holiday Inn wink

Hi Mikey, unfortunately the problems started 10 years ago and involves damage done to my now 26 year old daughter by lousy epilepsy drugs and lousy doctors.
The resultant depression has come very close to taking her for good on a number of occasions..
She's been on the mend for 5 years now (new Neurologist & new medication) but occasionally start to slip back.
This terrifies my Wife as she used up all her emotions in the first 7 years or so.
She needs more Tom me and I won't be doing a six weeker again, that's for sure.

Track down your local IAPT service (part of the NHS).

http://www.iapt.nhs.uk/services/

They run CBT courses which help with this. You don't need to go to your doctor to sign up. I can't recommend enough.

Hi, don't know anything about you or your past medical history, but go and see your GP, you could have had a small MI or something else sinister, probably not but it is worth checking.
Chest pain and SOB are serious symptoms and need investigating.

I had a bit of a stress thing when away for a couple of weeks in Atlanta with work, my son was going through loads of tests at the time to find out what was up with him (nothing major) and I was hosting a team meeting for the first week, cue loads of drinking, eating crap, late nights and jet lag.

Beign away from home, expecially when stuff is happening plays tricks with you mind, seocnd week I moderated the boozing, got some exercise, the team went home and I chilled a bit and was much better.

OP described me 3 years ago, root cause was pretty much this. Luckily it came just before a holiday. I didn't read a single email for two weeks, bliss.

I don't think I could have come up with 3 sentences that more accurately portray my current work situation myself.

I need to take a break, and plan a way out.

And same here - although I eventually succumbed and had to have time off work. 7 weeks in all. This plus some other non-work traumas since have helped me train my brain to give less of a fk. This is a large part of the secret........

Ironically my stress problems came at the end of my most enjoyable and successful 2 year period to date - I just worked and cared too damned much and burnt out.

I think on the verge of 'burned out' is where I've been feeling for the last 9 months.
I've been covering North America for ten years now (which I love) but because its gone so well and sales are so much improved, they've asked me to do the same in India, while still covering America. First trip to India was June last year and BANG I suddenly start realizing that I'm in my 50's.
Family stress is what takes me over the edge.
