Before H&S was invented, I was standing at the end of the runway on the beach at Lee-on-Solent for the HMS Daedalus airshow in the 1980s.

The runway orientation is from sea-to-land, if you follow.

The Lancaster was circling the Isle of Wight, at high altitude, whilst waiting for it's 'turn'.

We could just see it.

The tannoy announced it - the pilot, still at altitude turned toward the runway.

'Shame it's so high - what is the pilot doing?' Someone said near to me in the small crowd of fans.

Still very high, we could just make out that the pilot put the nose down.

At full chat, the Lancaster went into a power-dive, aiming at the end of the runway, or if you like, where we were standing.

We were all staring at certain death, four Merlins screaming, when of course the pilot pulled out at the last moment to fly at minimum altitude along the runway, where the paying guests were assembled at each? side, and then up into a glorious banking turn back round and eventually over our heads along the shoreline.

A moment burned into my memory as if it were yesterday.

Two of them you say? scratchchin
