I've looking at resprays (more looking than doing at the moment) and had 4 quotes for a full respray in Formula Red. Two were £3500 to £4000 and two were £1500 to £1800. All are plus VAT. The dearer quotes were flashy, top end sprayers. The cheaper quotes were local small businesses but appeared to have all the right kit and experience of fibreglass (TVR's and Lotus). I have also inspected previous work and all looks good from the cheaper guys. £4k on a non-low mileage Chim just doesn’t seem to add up on an economic basis.
However with such a wide spread of quotes I ask myself why? Are the lower overheads really responsible for the cheaper quote? Are some top end garages cashing in on the TVR name?
One of the ‘cheaper’ quotes was a name mentioned often on this site and also has good reviews.
The cheaper quotes are half price so even if it only looks goof for half as long, you still haven’t lost out.
Comments and thoughts welcome (likewise if people have recommendations, please feel free to PM me as I am expecting a response of go to Surface and Design and spend a lot of cash – No offence to S&D, I don’t doubt they are the best but is the best and 90% of the way there, worth twice as much. But again, I could be fooling myself )

Will that be a colour change?
Some may remove doors, hood etc. others may prep and spray "what they can access"
Some may remove lights, badges, door handles etc. others may just mask?
Some may take care to not get overspray over chassis suspension etc. others may not?
Some may have built up an excellent reputation and can charge accordingly!
I'm looking at doing this later in the year, to red also.
I was wondering what a realistic figure would be, if i could take the body off and run it to them, I was still thinking it would be £2k+ for a proper deep looking job. I just know if I don't get it done I will always want it.
Do you think they much more expensive places will be worth it?

Me too. I had the front end of my Z4 resprayed as the previous owner had had a terrible paint job carried out in the past. The bumper and bonnet were flaking. I took it to a local paint shop, they prepped it and painted it for £400 and did a fine job. It looked brand new, very happy. That included the bonnet, bumper and blending into the front wings.
You need a specialist in fibreglass ,I spoke to a paint sprayer today who said he could sort the cracks and re paint but it would crack in a few months ,it needs a jell coat what ever that is .
Brummmie has just had his car painted ,looks superb .

So many mysteries and myths about fibreglass cars, you can't "replace" the gel coat !This is an old but still very useful article, as it says fibreglass is fibreglass whether a Sagaris or an old kit car and how to repair it is the same

Hi lads had my griff sprayed last year by i firm called crash bang wallop paid £2355 when they gave me the car back it was rubbish the paint was patchy over spray on rubbers where they did not take them off the paint applied was very thin you could see the base coat ,any way cut a long story short ,had the car sprayed again this time by glamorgan classic cars and the finish is out of this world they took every thing off that i could not take off myself the reason why i took off some bits was so that i did not have to pay the VAT price £3000 worth every penny it was also a colour change which must firm charge you extra any way have alook at pics tell me what you think , be will picking car up in about 2/3weeks i like to add its is a mine field out there you can pay alot of money and still get a rubbish job there are good and bad at both ends of the scale

Ask the man who did your exhaust mods.
He knows a local ex TVR garage painter that he rates pretty highly.

Give Rick a call at Salford Servicing.Next door to Dave the Trimmer near Milton Keynes.
Rick use to work for TVR Power in their Bodyshop. Gets a lot of work.
The guy who owns S.S. is a TVR nut.

I'll pop in tomorrow when I drop the car off next door but off the top of your head do you know if Salford servicing are in the S & D price category or at a more reasonable area? I can't find anything through the search facility. Rick use to work for TVR Power in their Bodyshop. Gets a lot of work.

All I can say is that they have done a lot of work on my chim, Lupo lights etc. and their price and quality was very competitive.
They should have other tvr work in the garage for you to look at and compare.
Must agree the website needs some work to attract more tvr work.
But also what is best for me is that they are only 2 miles from where I live which is very handy.

I'm looking at a re-spray at the moment.
I've had quotes between £1500 and £3500 (plus vat)
This is for a same colour re-spray, external surfaces only.
That means at the top end we are talking over 4 grand, and even if I could
afford that much I'm not sure I can justify it on a car I paid £6k for.
All things being equal I guess it will be the difference between a perfect
showroom type job, and an something perfectly acceptable for everyday use.
My car has the usual stone chips and the lacquer is coming off in places, so
any re-spray is going to make it look a lot better.
I spent £1200 on a re-spray on my previous car (wedge 350i) and it absolutely
transformed the look of the car and how I felt about it. It was the best £1200
I could have spent.
I am wondering about stripping the paint myself with a water based stripper. Does
anyone have any experience of this and is it something a novice could do? My feeling
is that I'm doing the donkey work myself and leaving the clever bit to the professionals
