Rust, rust and rust.

Ball joints made of butter.
Rust.
Springs that snap every 30k miles or so.
Rust.
Motor for the heater goes wrong, the cogs snap so you always get air from just the one vent etc. (Listen for a clicking from the dash when starting the car).
Rust.

Big difference in overall quality on the 54 plates.

You can try and reset it...

But it is a big job if it doesn't work.

The clicking noise from behind dash on start up is usually a broken recirculated air flap servo motor linkage. It's a dash out job to rectify & takes a good 4 hrs to do plus a small pair of hands to get at retaining screws for motor.
As previously mentioned rust will b your biggest issue also a 2002 model year can be prone to engine coolant leaking into auto transmission fluid due to a faulty radiator which in turn causes auto box to slip & eventually loose drive unless it's detected at an early stage.
Front suspension is a weak point as lower control arm bushes perish & split together with outer ball joints wearing & also front & rear coil springs are very prone to breaking. Mind you this is probably a common fault on all cars today with the state our roads are in at present !
The injectors can also play up & cause poor starting due to excessive leak of which results in a replacement injector being needed.
If you can find a car with hood service history & you don't mind having the odd bit of bodywork attended to in order to keep on top of the rust then you will b rewarded by a car that can achieve good mpg if driven sensibly. It's like a lot of cars though, if you leave things to progressively get worse the repair costs will soon add up.

Rust killed our old '02 C class - it was unbelievable; I didn't think anything made out of the 1970s could rust like that. Lovely car when we got it, but the front and rear arches went and random "scabs" would break on panels.

I wouldn't go near one, not worth the bother. Either see if you can stretch to an '04 car or buy something else.

ETA: this was a very pampered, waxed, cleaned, garaged car.
