HI guys
I was thinking about how you would get all of the engine oil from a 997.1 turbo when its in for a service, I have read loads of forums and no one can tell you how to get all the oil out.
I think I am right in saying that it holds 8.5ltrs of oil and if the dealer does an oil change they will probably only get about 1.5ltrs of oil out.

Any thoughts?

You mean there isn't a drain point on the reservoir???????

There are two main drain plugs and if you're OCD, little ones within the turbo housing (catch tank?) that can be removed.

I always take out ~8 litres of oil everytime.

Is the whole oil drainage process documented anyway, say in a Bentley's manual or something similar?

Cheers

I (hope) you have a typo there.

Following the standard oil change procedure will leave you with only as much unchanged oil as makes absolutely no difference. And this without draining the turbo sumps.

A WAG is 8.5l is about right. (The factory manual calls for 7.8l of oil for my 03 Turbo. Different MY engines can have different oil fill amounts.)

A proper drain with the engine up to temperature (170F at least IIRC), a drain interval of in my car's case 20 minutes, but this can be different for different MY's -- for instance the new DFI engines require a 1 hour drain, and there is an overnight drain interval too, both with their own refill amounts given -- will get the correct amount of oil out that when the tech refills and goes by the reading on the oil dispensing gun and puts in the factory specified amount the oil level reading will be right where the factory says it should be: at the max line.

But regardless if the correct procedure for the engine is followed one gets almost all the oil out, enough that what remains doesn't impact the fresh oil in any measurable way.

You are right in saying that there are 2 drain plugs at the bottom of the engine and also there are 2 turbo drain plugs but you should not really take these out.
You are right in saying that you have to get the car to running temp and park it on level ground.
You also need to remove the oil filter housing as if it is not removed it can cause an air lock when trying to drain the oil.
Also you have to leave it for a few hours to let all the oil drain out.

As above, if you're only getting 1.5lt out then either it was never there in the first place or something is very wrong.

I cant understand why I can only get a very small amount of oil out when I try to give it a oil change.
Getting a little confused.

Are you saying only 1.5 litres comes out when you remove the crankcase plug and the reservoir plug?

Why don't you take some photos of the drain plugs and post them up.

The conclusion is that there hasn't been sufficient oil in the engine since the previous change, but I don't think even the good old 'air-cooled' 964 block can run on 2.5 litres without serious damage.

Despite protestations, I too feel pretty sure that the OP is only draining the crankcase, and not the actual oil reservoir.

Why not ask the local OPC and/or Indi what procedure they undertake and the amount of oil that is typically dispensed.

Here's a few pictures I found that may help.... or they may not.

Sombody else's photos, but I suspect that this is the reservoir drain plug - the reservoir has the majority of the oil, so you need more than a 5 litre container to catch it. On my old wreck, I place MrsOC's favorite washing-up bowl under the reservoir.

Exactly, next time pay more attention to what is being said.

Or completely forego servicing your own car because not following simple instructions can have very costly consequences.

That's just the crankcase drain. Since you have a "dry" sump there won't be much oil in it.

If you re-read the responses you have already received, it's all there. Basically the one you said "is not like mine" is the one you want to drain.

Reading the manual this time, because simply unscrewing this is almost guaranteed to result in a disaster of sorts.

When an OPC does a change on these cars does it also drain the oil cooler?

Do they they ever flush the oil tank?

A decent dry sump oil tank should be in two parts secured by a V-band so that it can be pulled apart cleaned out properly.

As above you now need to find the reservoir.

ETA I assume it's hidden under the wheelarch-protector somewhere on a 997?

Doing your own changes on any car is always difficult first time, but that's no reason not to persevere.

1) I'm serious about the washing-up bowl. Get a big wide one. The reservoir will be holding around 6 litres of oil, and the reservoir is tall/thin in shape, so the oil is going to exit rather quickly.

Forget a funnel - it will be swept away in the torrent.

2) measure the amount of oil that comes out - why? So you can put (at least) that much back in.

Source two new crush washers and the filter first, and do Mahle do a filter for your car? My examination of current metal Porsche branded filters is that they are cheap and nasty. The paper ones may or may not be.
