Tyre pressures for trackday?
Discussion
Hi Stewart,
My opinion, for what it's worth, is 26psi all round for dry track use,
22-23 if it's wet. Other than that, trial & error. ( Hopefully not too much error
)
I don't think you'd be too far away from the optimum.
This is just what I've gleaned from various sources as well as on here.
But you might have to up the pressures with a load of glenrobbo ballast on board!

Are Pirelli 6000's really bad? I know nothing about tyres but have pirelli's on the back and Yokohama's on the front (like that when I bought it). And from my experience, the back end sticks like glue, but front end tends to understeer when pushed.
When the time came I was intending to put Pirellis all round assuming they were a good make!!
Sorry if I've gone off subject from OP.

I think it's just a case of tyres improving over time. The 6000 design is essentially, iirc, about 30-years old.
Another factor with tyres is the actual age of the tyre itself as they harden with time.
From a TVR point of view, the strength of tyre's sidewalls need to matched to the weight of the car. Modern cars are generally about 50% heavier than a TVR and so modern tyres have stronger sidewalls to provide sufficient support for the tyre. Softer sidewall versions are usually available.
I strongly suspect that Samy's tyres are pushing 8-years old as the car has seen very little use in the last 6-years (all that's changed now
) and it's one of my 'to do's' to change them.
I may just get a set of minilites with new tyres ahead of S-Club Tour so that Philpot and I can be wheel buddies. As to the type of tyre, possibly Rainsport 3.

The garage has had a bit of a 'mare changing the engine mounts. Glad the parts didn't arrive in time for me to do them over the weekend.
That said, the job is done, the engine is now about 20mm above the front arb rather than resting on it. Took the chance to check the front brake pades and there's a good 20mm left on them so should last until the brake upgrade arrives.
Going to get a set of flexible, ratchet spanners this evening.

20mm !!!!!! they should last "till the cows come home"

Hmmmm, hucking around Oulton on 8-yr old P6000s?
I'm glad I'm too old to die young........
Just thankful it's not Silverstone, it's not too kind on Pirellis by all accounts.
Even new ones.
I love a good adrenaline rush

Tyre pressures for my car on a track day are as on the road.
If it is a nice dry day, and you are giving it plenty, remember to check the pressures from time to time, as they will rise with hard cornering. The most I have ever had to let out of 888s on a warm day was 8 psi. You will therefore be wise to bring a compressor or foot pump with you for going home time.

Aha! Found it!
I've been looking for this topic for a while, never expected it to be so far back.
Must be a chatty lot on here.
Just like to say a big Thankyou to Stewart ( mk1fan ) for an enjoyable day at Oulton Park ( not Broad ). Great fun & the weather stayed kind to us.
My son Rick also says thanks for the heads up, he managed to get a last minute place and thoroughly enjoyed turning his tyres into slicks & burning £70 worth of petrol before lunch. He has now decided his Scooby needs more power.
I told him it needs more rubber
Oh, and some of those little MX-5's were quite rapid! I don't think they were standard though......
Next time hope it'll be Samy putting in a few laps.
Cheers Stewart, thanks for the bolts,
Glen

Evening Glen.
Was indeed a very beautiful day. It was good to meet the pair of you. Austin looked a solid S.
I gave my passenger side tyres a good 'trim', the new sections of tarmac are grippy and abrasive!
No problems with the bolts, they would have only sat in my tool box.
I did a few laps as passenger in the GT-86 which was very nice. Perhaps I should have got one of those instead
I'll update the thread on Samy's well being.
Looking forward to S-Club Tour. Although, I'll keep people posted about trackdays. I don't see why our S's can't mix it with the other brands on the 'open' days. Brands Hatch in April anyone?

Keep an eye on the Chimaera forums. A group of about 10 of us regularly go to track days in the south east together. Next one is 17th March. We all love the S - it was simply the fore-runner of our cars and it has loads of performance and chukkability. Come and join us, it's so much more fun with a gang to share chats and tools.
