Hi there

Getting a cel/engine light, yellow one to do with emissions. Checked error code and its:-
P0036
Final stage for heater of oxygen sensor behind cat. conv. bank 1


I am guessing this is the 02 sensor after the cat? I have no idea which side bank 1 is though, is that driver or passenger side (UK car)?

Lastly anyone got a link to a generic 02 sensor which will do, Porsche wanted £350 for this, I was like it is OK I shall fix it myself, I am sure an 02 sensor can cost so much and I know its quite easy to replace as long as it comes un-done without too much hassle.

Bank 1 is the left side if you're standing at the back of the car - passenger side on a RHD UK car.

Depending on whether its a boxster or 911 - the engine is the other way round!

Boxster - bank 1= RHS as sitting in car
911 -bank 1 = LHS as sitting in the car

Doesn't matter RHD/LHD - engine in same place...

Another way:
Bank 1 is always left of the crank pulley

Watch out on 996/997 - the exhaust swaps: LH tailpipe is from bank 2........

Good luck with that, my Mech said it was a bd when my RHS one went recently...

I'll post some pics up shortly...

Mine is a Carrera S, simply get a tool on it and screw it out and then disconnect in engine bay and pull it through and reversal. I can get the cats out of my car in about 30 minutes if they have to come out if its crazy tight. Probably because yours is a turbo it is harder work.

Be sure to lubricate your turbo actuator ball joints whist you are down there. The stuff you need is Fuch Gleitmo Grease spray WSP540. Lub both top and bottom ball joints. Euro parts also supply sensors at good prices. Top tip tie a length of string to the plug on the sensor before you unclip the and drag the wire out, it will help you pull the new wire back through.

I'm about to replace one on my 996 C2, got it from http://www.lambdasensor.com for £73 delivered with free lambda socket and it's the proper one with the right connector. You can get generic ones for £50 but then you have to work out the wiring and use the old connector..

My EML has come on, diagnostic tool tells me it’s O2 sensor 1, On bank 2. My indie can’t get the car in for another 2 weeks, will it be ok to drive the car in the meantime? frown

The O2 sensors have an effective operating range; once limits are exceeded a CEL is illuminated (and possible limp mode contingency), there may be some loss of power.

As with most things DME, the fault code may not be the full story - a faulty Air Mass Sensor will provide incorrect info and the fuelling will be supplied to match; it's then the O2 sensors that detect a weak/rich mixture and reach their limits meaning the DME displays an O2 code.....

A faulty O2 sensor will possibly lead to mixture issues; worse case some misfires - I wouldn't start a 2k miles roadtrip but a few journeys shouldn't hurt it. Watch for rough running or smoke that suggests a marked change in the mixture adjustment and stop using it if it gets too bad.

The CEL is also a simple diag device; solid 'on' means a general running or emissions fault but 'flashing on/off' signifies conditions that could damage the Catalytic Convertors.
