Good retro non-911 sports car?

I really like the modified retro theme of the batch of 911 stories that have appeared over the last year or so, from Magnus Walker, to Jack Olssen, and at the far end of the scale, Singer. But, I'm not a massive 911 fan. Don't get me wrong, I admire them, I think they look great, and I know they handle well and are bomb proof. I just don't have the passion for 911's that some others do.
What other cool sports cars can be modded like this, and still be as (close as possible) reliable as an old 911? Personally I love Ferrari's. And if I do get a 308/328, then I might (after I eventually tire of red on tan) mod it in this way, to the cries of the tifosi! Something like the rally car.
What other retro sports cars look good modified, even mixing and matching parts like the tuners above, especially against the grain of what is normally concours for that classic?

Dependent on budget, Id say just get a rally/race spec upgrade done after post purchase. Just avoid the race car aesthetics in terms of stickers and it shouldn't look anything other than a very purposeful road car until they get closer.

I was thinking that myself. Rather than go down the route of a classic TVR, why not a Speed Six Tuscan in race livery? That would be v nice!I know it's not a Tuscan, but you could copy the idea. I wonder how much a printer would charge for this amount of stickerage...

I love the 240Z but most of them rusted away decades ago...The older Ferrari's are not that quick, Here is me chasing one around Castle Combe, and I stuck with it in a basic Megane Cup without giving the cup anywhere near the full beans (my track car was broke, and I didn't need a broken day car), but it looked really great.. and it was just me and him on the track for 15 mins, some great fun chasing it about.
However, I would LOVE an old skyline, just a magic looking car, something about it is so right and purposeful.
