Paul, I think he sent it to me in the first place in one of those bookfacetube emails that made my phone go wobbly.

Gmail would avoid this kind of issue if you use 2fa..

Stopped using traditional mail quite some time ago..

Two factor authentication.

With a normal log in you use a userid and password this is counted as 1 factor.

This is how I normally log in.

However should a new device (ie phone, computer) attempt to access my account it will be challenged to enter a second factor before access is granted.

This second factor is a 6 digit number that changes with every login ( or based on time)

You obtain the 6 digit number either by receiving it via SMS text to your mobile or by using a smartphone app like google authenticator. This is time based and generates a new 6 digit number every 30 seconds. When the code changes old codes are no longer valid.

Another thing to consider is that google are under constant attack from gov agencies hackers and script kiddies they have almost infinite resources to protect themselves certainly more than me.
