Have put the idea to SWMBO to see if we can at least go and get behind the wheel of one...

I'm sure that the car is good for the money, but that finance deal is far from appealing. 49 months!!! £5k fee at the end? fk that

See what your saying, but it would be a monthly payment well within my budget, plus most finance deals do allow you to over pay now, so i could always do that when i am a bit more flush some months..

I assume you can give it back instead of paying £5k.
So it's a 4 year rental.
With an option to buy at the end.

Personally, I'd prefer a 4 year bank loan for the same monthly payments which would give me roughly £10k to buy a car - which I will still own at the end.

Most motor finance companies will allow you to re-finance the balloon payment, but it's still an expensive way of buying a car.

Don't you mean "Pull the trigger"?

(Hopefully it's a fully automatic with an extra large magazine)

The appeal of these is their utilitarianism. Therefore, if I was buying I'd be going for the absolute bottom of the range, steel wheels, no toys etc.

Don't forget you still need to pay for maintenance.

Over four years that's going to be a few services, road tax, a new set of tyres, an mot.

On the two or three year plan you might not have these extra expenses, but on a four year plan you will.

The £5k is not a fee. It's a final payment if you then want to own the vehicle - you could otherwise hand it back.

As pcp schemes go, it doesn't look a bad deal, but make sure the warranty covers that 4th year in case it goes bang.

So when looking at what else you can get for £240 per month, that car starts to look decidedly ropey.
As a purchase price £15k is pretty good

Ok, that same monthly payment would get you a £9.5k loan from Natwest (better deals are undoubtedly out there). Now see what cars you can buy for that (one of those Dacia things, but a year older for a start!).

Do you really want to drive one of those things for 4 years, and then not even own it at the end?

Everyone is different, but I couldn't talk myself into seeing that as a good idea.

That's what I meant. I saw all of the other fees (and also thought 'fk that') and confused the terms.

You wanna check that as well. Quite a lot of deals also lump the interest on up front so even if you did pay off in a year you're still paying the whole 4 yr interest.

I always find PCP deals palatable IF the final payment price is likely to be less or equivalent to what the car's worth, along with a low monthly payment.

1. That's not a low monthly payment
2. If that thing's worth anywhere near £5k in 5 years time I'll eat my arse.

Regardless of anyone's opinion on the car itself, there's better deals to be had.

What's the appeal in spending a lot of cash on a cheap undesirable car?
