£5-7K budget - what would you buy - were do you put your £

no real criteria - no too concerned about mpg - - ideally seat 4 - well 2 kids in back ??

Possible options old school TT - older the better as tipped to go up?
Audi RS2 - but cheap ones are very tatty
Merc 500 SL
merc 320 CE

Any other thoughts pls people

E39 M5, but it would be the upper end of your budget and possibly a bit more for a decent one.

Alfa 156 GTA or a 166 3.2 V6 - ironic as deep depreciation from new but I think they will be sought after in years to come pushing up prices.

Would hopefully go the way of the Lancia Intergrale in years to come.

147GTA, having been a passenger in one with a Q2 with the driver messing around racing a colleague in a boxster s I'm seriously impressed. On paper there may be a second difference 0-60 but off a tight roundabout and up a uphill slip road there was maybe 1/2 a car length difference at the top.

Can't see either 156 or 147GTA's ever dropping below 4k. The wife having owned a 1.6 147 for 7 years they are pretty well put together arguably better than anything Ford or vauxhall were producing at the time.

Classic Impreza, RB5 maybe - practical choice would be an estate (wagon if you prefer)

Get a good/unmodified/PPP version, and it's only going up in value if the mileage stays sensible.

I'd have said an XK8/r but unless the OP is short then you won't fit 2 kids in the back. I have one and can fit the wife and the little one in but at 5'11" the drivers seat is pretty much touching the rear seat. great car though! More practical and just as quick there is the XJR, 7K will probably get an X350 aluminium bodied version. a lot of car for your money.

I'd be getting either an S4 or a 545i. Both V8 300+bhp, and for a little more than your £7k, (<£8.5k), they'd be sub 80k miles on as late a plate as possible (poss 55 or newer).
