Bit of a daft question but who made the chassis?
The Malaysian chassis, I'm assuming this was for the export cars, they didn't ship them back and use them did they.
I have a 2000 car ands its chassis is wk!
I'm just trying to find an excuse for such a bad job!
I'm aware the chassis on the earlier cars are in house but is there a possibility the later cars used the Malaysian chassis.
Looking at the build dates it seems year 2000 cars are the shortest production figures per year so did they use up some of the spare chassis or am I way off the mark.
I can't see them sending them all this way but you never know!
Any ideas lads.

Thank you Nemisis, I've noticed things like the engine bracing bars and it looks like fatigue has caused cracking on the weld joints! So that seems to tie in. Very interesting.

In house chassis are not always the best either.

Being a 2000 car you probably have a white chassis and the protection on those is known to be lousy so that may well be a factor as well.

Its hard to know what the facts are but either way the white powder coating is pathetic.

Does this problem only effect Chims/ Griffs or are all the chassis from the late 90's onwards effected by this outsourced work?

Hi Alun, I have a 98 Chimaera, and this winter had a half body lift to replace the outriggers. Apart from these, the rest of the chassis was in good condition for its age, so it's very much luck of the draw I think.

The pathetic white powder coat was applied over two years iirc 1998 - 2000(on chassis made in Blackpool)and was done in house. I understand it had previously been done externally (might be wrong on that) but it took them a couple of years to sort the process out. On cars subsequent to 2000 they'd sussed it.

I have the dodgy stuff on my chassis btw.

Mine lived in Scotland for 10 years so that doesn't help.
Sheel on here has a twin of my car, his is a year older but the chassis is like new, similar mileage but his has been Molly coddled down south. Very different weather so it could be just that!

Though not many owners are aware, or care enough to clean any road debris from between body and chassis. Leaving it to gather/move/penetrate ANY coating that may be there. Many cars I've seen at various meetings have so much crud between body and chassis it's difficult to see where one ends and the other begins. Just asking for trouble.

I'm determined to find a way of sealing the riggers from the road.
I have roles of EPDM rubber used in the glass industry, I'm pretty sure I could seal them up in such a way that it can easily be removed to allow inspection. Water tight is the thing.
The crud that does all the damage is because it has such easy access and a tight gap, its hard to clear it and that can just lead to scratching the riggers anyway, I'll seal them up and you won't see much.
Its the front out riggers that will be the hardest to keep water out but I've already got some ideas!
I don't care how many coats of paint etc a sharpe stone flicked up at huge velocity will break the surface and it all starts again.

Excuse me Nemasis I didn't see your question, yes mine has the spacer in the O/S engine mounting.
Crap, does that mean I have a foreign object that my car sits on?

Does the chassis number tell us where it was produced?
No wonder it felt like it was twisting when on track,,,,,, or is that my Dom special engine putting out to many horses?

A 97 TVR mark on the bonnet is a sign of a Malaysian car.

The powder coat on my Tuscan is superb can't say the same about my Chim , which I've enamel painted.

Oh , this is the Tuscan today ... original 8 years old

I have a 96 car ,chassis looks great .. A quick fix is to Stikaflex some floor mat in front of the outriggers .

Every time I show my little mod all I get is a little chuckle ,they may laugh but I have never seen a stone or any mud trapped between the outrigger and body ..

Glow worm, I'll check in the morning thanks.
That looks like a lovely chassis, its so clean its never been outside!
Its ridiculous but I think I'll hang my car on a wall when its all done.
Garage queen!
I just want it in my mates showroom so I can show it all off.

Sod em Daz, that's a good idea poorly executed, lol.
See that sort of thing that could work really well.
The rubber I'm talking about its really flexible and I have mastics that will seal but can come off pretty easy,
I really want to encase the tubes, no big deal and just pull it off once a year to check, MOT etc. it sounds naff but you wouldn't even notice.
Isn't that a floor mat out of a transit or mk3 cortina.
I found an old set of mats for my long departed MGB, Im single so it doesn't matter, there what you wipe your feet on when entering my house. Well I reckon they look cool, I'm never gonna get another girlfriend an I!
