What new (or recent used) 4x4 would people recommend as most suitable for towing a Brian James Race Transporter 6 race trailer, which may some times be loaded to its full gross capacity of 3,500kg. I am intending to travel to various UK and EU tracks as well as tow to Spain from time to time. I may also camp with the trailer in tow at campsites which could have muddy/slippery ground.

Ideally the 4x4 will be able to easily tow the trailer as well as be a comfortable and engaging drive when not towing.

+1 on the 4.5S Cayenne. I get 16.7 MPG out to the Ring with my BJ Race Shuttle fully loaded.

Thanks for all the advice.

I have test driven the new RRS SDV8 ok but almost to cosseting ride but the V8 had more character and performance.

I was thinking about the Diesel S V8 Cayenne but they do not have low ratio boxes any more.

I think the Shogun except mabe the V8 Desel may be lacking perfomance when not towing also understand the auto box is slow to pullaway.

I want to test drive a Toureg the V8 Desel has good perfomance and pulling power. Only the Escape has the low ratio transfer box.

From experience will I need low ration transfer box for towing heavy trailer on slippery surfaces?

Do you really need a low ratio box? Not for towing, certainly.

For pulling a car and trailer even over a muddy field i would be surprised if you actually needed a lo-ratio box. Even my Frontera will happily drag a van+trailer in 4-hi out of a muddy Cadwell paddock..

We have towed for years with either a transit van or for the last few years with a LR Range Rover with biggish trailers and never needed a low ratio box. All the big 4 x 4's will do this fine, just check the max towing capacity, as the foreign old bill have checked this with us on a couple of occasions over the years - although really I think they just wanted to see what was in the trailer.

Thanks for advice.
I had Incorrect understanding of the need for Low ratio for my needs.
It does mean that my options are a bit wider now.
I will keep an eye on the Max towing weight.

My 'chipped' Defender is the best towing vehicle I have ever had, beats discos,l200's etc...I would not have anything else now.

I use a Discovery 4, it's more than up to the job, not only do I tow my race car, but I have occasionally towed my daughters school's rowing boats.
what I've found is the bigger the trailer the easier it actually is.

The only time I've had to use low ratio was when the car sunk in mud with a thin veneer of grass on top, the car sunk almost up to it's axels, to get out the trailer had to be disconnected. It also needed the diffs locked too, but if the paddock is that bad I'm not sure anything short of a 4x4 with mud tyres or a tractor would be able to tow.
