Just bought a 996 turbo. Gulp!

Tomorrow I pick up the quickest car I have ever owned, a lovely 996 turbo (manual). I am super excited about this. In my tiny little head its a super-car but to most its a fast GT/sports car. Do NOT spoil my dream! Anyway, I have a question.

For something special to drive did I do the right thing? The choices where many; Maserati, Sexy growling jags, high powered M series stuff,unhinged AMGs, boring Audi RS4 (Seriously? Can't see the hype around this car, it's boring to drive) . Tough competition, if you exclude the Audi.

For the record I just based my choice on what gave me that "fk me" feeling.

My wife introduced me to a game called "punch buggy" - you essentially get to punch someone if you see a VW beetle. I see this as a bonus, now i get to punch my wife every morning when we walk out to the drive and see my car. Win Win.

No problem on fuel and tyres compared with some of the options.

I'm changing my tyres after 17 miles in my turbo. The rears have lasted 17k the fronts have been on for longer.

They are a great motor mate, congrats. I owned one for 3 years and other than getting a rad swapped due to stone damage under warranty it didn't cost me a penny. Well other than rear boots lol. Servicing through RSJ was also very very reasonable.

Given the acceleration, and the (damn near ) 200mph max, I think that in the year 2000 (when it hit the market & won "EVO car of the year " ) it was a "supercar" rather than a "GT/Sports Car".

The only things that might exclude it nowadays could be affordability & the (inevitable) advance of technology . . however, it definitely WAS in 2000, so for me, it sure as hell still is.

You made the right choice, don't worry.

If you need to turn it up from 10 to 11, a map will do it. Many say add a Zorst too, but I actually like my (x50) cars' ability to pootle around quietly, but then sound fairly savage (with standard exhaust ) from 3500rpm upwards on boost when you want it to. All part of the "Jekyll & Hyde" personality that I love about it.

Definitely did the right thing, it's a proper super car, just shy of 190mph, and acceleration to scare the poop out of you!

I love mine, just popped out for a few bits at the supermarket, 2 hours later, back home, sunny day, twisty country lanes, 2/3rd gear, engine howling...marvellous fun!

Compared with the growly jag you did right with the turbo. I overtook a maserati once up a hill from a slowish roundabout and he was screaming it, i thought how disappointingly slow it looked driven hard. no experience of the others but sitting in that 911 looking around you, at the classic curves of the back windows, the wings, the rear in the wing mirrors plus of course the power and the feeling through the wheel.... yeah i reckon you did right

I'm new to the TT club too, had mine a month now. Only problem is with all the rain I've hardly had a decent drive yet...and when I do all the decent lanes are flooded. Anyway, some questions for you guys... 1) is it worth joining owners club for weekend drives etc in Bournemouth area 2) if planning a track visit e.g. spa, is it better on old barely legal tyres or new ones 3) what is best rubber for m way miles? 4) anyone know someone who can renovate a pcm1 nav CD drive?

Love it! Been all over the place this weekend regardless of the weather. The car is filthy already. It feels great, drives superbly and the way it gathers speed takes me be surprise. Its very easy to go very quickly and not really release it
