Who designed the M96 996 Engine?

We all know the facts, the failures, the fundamental design faults. Its been done to death.

But who is responsible? Who designed this engine? I want a name! Who was it?

Oh and I am well aware that Hans Mezger contributed to the engine by assisting on some cooling design in the sump, for which he was paid a royalty for every car sold!

But at that time, he was a consultant, and was only in an advisory capacity.

Ultimately, it was Weidling, and I guess Lagaay, but they didn't design the engine did they!

Wasn't it all a sinister plan to generate business cooked up by Bolton based engine rebuilder Herr Tech?

(and before anyone takes that seriously - I've got a car with a Hartech rebuild!)
