As title really.

Getting a new car on Sat and the dealer rang me up and told me to pay the cash portion of the purchase into the bank before Sat otherwise they would be unable to tax the car and therefore I can't have it.

In the past however I've always paid the deposit on order and then the balance on delivery, normally once I've looked at the car.

I'm not wanting to give 9k to them before I even get there and I don't believe for a second they 'can't' tax it without the cash. It is this normal now and it's just me who's not kept up with the times.?

Debit card on collection is how it's always worked for me in the past. Does sound wrong having to pay before you own the car - I'd expect ownership and money to exchange at the same time.

Check the car over again first, maybe have a little test drive again to make sure it is all fine before handing over the money.

Once you have paid they have less interest in you and you are into the after-sales process. If you see anything wrong before paying you can drive off in your part-ex again and the money hungry dealer will get your issue resolved very quickly.

You have the power until you hand over the money.

When I worked in finance we would usually only send over the money once the customer had at least set eyes on it, they would occasionally kick up a fuss about payment in advance, but we always said no.

Is it new to you, or 'new new'? If it's a new registration there's a bit more involved for them (as I recall) and they're turning a 'new car' into a 'pre reg' so if you back out, theoretically it's worth less, which might explain their request.

It's also about cashflow. Most dealerships have a LOT of cars going out tomorrow, and as soon as they are registered (today) they are paid for by the dealer to the manufacturer.

It's always preferable to get a car paid for before it goes out. Just makes it easier.

You shouldn't have to pay for it until collection - sounds like their cash flow isn't great if they need you to pay now!

pay on collection

always pay at least £100 on a credit card, you then have section 75 protection on the car

Dealer simply wants the money paid in this month to meet targets. Saturday is the 1st.

Rubbish. It will count for targets on the registration date, not when it is paid for...

On my last (personal) lease car I'd been driving it a month before paying a penny.

Debit card on collection if you are happy with the car. Presumably you've paid a deposit upon placing the order, so they can use some of that money to cover the cost of the tax etc.

Completely different. The lease deal is cashable when you sign and if it's a sign and drive there's nothing to pay on signing. Once you sign the bank own it.

Brand new car, I think ill TFR it but refuse to sign any docs for finance till I see it, getting the car near Birm and I'm in Sheffield.

It's the attitude that annoys me, it's not like 'we'd appreciate the payment before', it's more like 'here's a crap lie to make out you HAVE to pay''.

Oh well....

They can register it without being paid for, but if for whatever reason you didn't collect the car - they have a registered and a car they own stuck.

I paid a £500 deposit on CC prior to collection + £xxx to tax it.

The dealer put a years Tax on the car before I got there. Paid the rest on the day and drove off.

Previously the dealers have said they can't tax it until the receiving funds on the day and a valid insurance certificate, but they obviously can do it in my experience.

Last new car we bought a couple of years ago, we paid with debit card on collection, but they wouldn't do a Saturday collection at all - they said if anything goes wrong it's a nightmare / impossible to sort out at the weekend.

I was pretty miffed about it at the time but thinking about it, we probably have generally picked up cars during the week in the past so it's never come up before.

Can't believe they're not going to be delivering cars tomorrow.

Most garages operate a no/limited collection on Saturday policy (ours is before 10 or after 4 on Saturdays) but I expect most garages will be waiving this tomorrow due to it being the day it is!

Indeed, I'm picking up in 3 hours. The sales lady did initially say that don't do handovers on weekends but make an exception if it's 'new plate' day.

It's March 1st, the dealership could have 30 plus cars going out today. If they taxed them all yesterday they'd be paying the manufacturer at point of registration...that's a lot of money
