I have been using AOL 9 without any issues at all for several months. On Saturday we log on as normal and the system goes through the usual password checks etc, then as soon as the AOL homepage starts to load we get a warning message that AOL has detecteda software problem and is closing but will restart automatically. It cycles through this a couple of times and then just stops.

Try rebooting PC. Try uninstalling AOL and reinstalling and still the problem persists. Phone AOl helpline 3 times and get talked through a variety of possibilities, none of wich solve the problem. The eventually tell me to check the Gain on the line with BT who say there is no problem. Phone AOL who are trying to convince me it is a problem with my modem settings, I'm not convinced as I seem to be able to connect with AOL OK, it is as soon as the weebpage loads that the problem occurs.

Try loading AOL version 8. This at least gets as far as opening the AOL homepage, but try to go beyond this and I get chucked off the net. I can operate Windows messenger though when connected.

So any bright ideas out there as to what the problem might be and ho to fix it.

I had a similar problem with a friends PC running AOL, AOL kept kicking him and trying to restart the session for no aparrent reason. It turned out to be spyware/adware can't say which one was causing the problem as he had 61 programs which shouldn't have been there!.

If you are not using any sort of spyware protection try running a scan with these programs if your not already using them.

Spysweeper
Ad-Aware

Dont know how I got it, but AOL autofix used to fix connection problems for me, If my connection went down then there was a box that come up with text: Fix it for me.
It fixed most problems within minutes. I think software was on an autoupdate for AOL9.

Ok Have now run spyware and cleared a load of crap. Have run a virus check and no problems there. Have reloaded AOL and still the same thing is happening. Any more solutions gratefully received.

Try this open AOL -> click Help on the top right hand corner of the sign on box -> click 'solving common problems -> click 'I get disconnected from AOL service' -> a box should appear in the bottom left hand corner -> click autofix.

See if that does anything!.

Edited because I missed a step out, sorry!.

At this point, I would suggest backing-up or copying all of your personal data to a disk and going for a clean install of windows as there is may be some program or windows setting causing the problem.

Doing it this way can rule out a software conflict/problem. If you do this and there is still a problem, then you would have to start thinking about a hardware fault e.g. your modem or telephone line.

What may be a good idea is, if possible to test a laptop or other computer on your telephone line to rule it out.
