My lad is at an early stage of model railways (basic hornby trackpack, couple of trains etc). I took him to a club 'show' a while back and think he was a bit overwhelmed (a quick whiz round and we were done). We have a free day tomorrow and there is an event (Abingdon) that we could go to, but I thought perhaps we could have a good look around a decent shop if there is one locally. We're based near Chesham, Bucks and don't mind a few miles in pursuit of father/son things to do!

Thanks Martin. We've been looking online, but not many with pictures of the store to get an idea of size etc (and if worth travelling for). There's a little one just down the road and although helpful and friendly, if we'd travelled to visit it, chances are we'd be a tad disappointed.

We have family in Sussex, so have been there a few times. In fact, I think the bar has been set a little high compared to what we can find more locally. In the end we followed the sat-nav to Leighton Buzzard which was a bit of a disappointment, met some friends for lunch in Dunstable so not a complete waste, then stopped in the little shop in Aston Clinton (Aylesbury) where he found a couple of bits to buy.

I'm sorry this is too late for your trip but I would suggest Junction 20 Models in Kings Langely. It's 5 minutes from J20 of the M25 and is quite good. Last time I was in (a whiel ago now) he had quite a few second hand bits as well as most of the Hornby catalogue. It might also be worth looking at toy fairs; akin to ebay but you get to touch & feel before you commit to buy.

Cheers. We've bought a few bits from Junction 20 Models. That seems to be about the size and feel of local shops.

Never had a problem with sellers on Ebay, you'll probably find what you need. Check out the various magazines at the newsagents as well. If you have any problems or questions just ask here, I've been dabbling in various scales for many years(currently US ho gauge).Railway Modeller has a classified listing many swap meets across the UK.
