Hi all. I have been looking at a face lifted E63 mainly an estate version for the rarity and practicality as it will be my only car. I've seen used 2013 cars which haven't had a massive drop compared to buying new. Now I know that a new one will lose me a lot straight off the forecourt but there are so many new toys to play with!!
Now, the strange alternative is an SLS. Most of the ones I've seen are around mid 90's now for 2011/12 model. Spec and tech wise it wouldn't be up there with the latest mercs but then again it's such a special car. I'd love some thoughts and feedback on what you guys would do. Thanks in advance!

I didn't mind the pre facelift but much prefer the face lifted E. Had a quick drive of one at MB World but found it was quieter than a C63 but I suppose for longer journeys that would be better. Estate is not priority but prefer it's back end to the saloon. That was the only thing I didn't really like about the previous shape.
Now the problem is that an SLS is possibly in reach but obviously less practical. However, in these situations heart rules head but I'm trying to be cool headed! One plus point for the SLS is that it might hold its value better but then again with the baby SLS around the corner, that's not guaranteed

For example, my CL63 will need new discs and pads at the front in the next 5000 miles and that is £2300 fitted, before any discounts. Not sure how the E63 and SLS compare parts cost wise? Probably worth having a chat with you local dealership service department to get some idea of cost?
Re the sound, maybe it just sounds quieter on the inside because of better insulation and materials on the E class than the C class? I thought my CL was way quieter until I followed it in another car....!
I was looking at an SLS but only the roadster. Then had a look at the new SL and found the SL63 AMG was as quick (in a straight line) and had the benefit of both a hard top and roadster so bought a nearly new one this week

Brilliant! I hadn't considered an SL but personally the shape isn't really to my taste. Even the SLS shape took time to grow on me because I loved the shape of the 300slr so much. The SL is a good third choice though as I assume it comes fairly well specced up.

If you go for an SLS then you should be prepared to pay a premium for maintenance as it is such a high spec car that has high spec components. That being said it is a German car and build quality is for me the bests, so teat it with respect and you might be surprised. Mine has now 17000 on the clock and has not given me any bother as of yet although I have not really stretched it's legs on a long drive yet.
Hi Colin. What is the ballpark for servicing? I currently have a Bentley continental supersport with servicing bills consistently over 1k. Do you take yours to a specialist or dealer? I found with the Bentley that main dealer servicing was pretty bad for the brand but apparently Mercedes Benz world(brook lands) is quite good
Just got a reply from dealer this morning. My Bentley is worth nothing! 
well not really nothing but having looked properly at other similar cars I suppose offers have been fair but still difficult to swallow.
The problem now is whether or not I take the plunge. Man maths says yes but brain says no! Partner says you decide so no help there!

I wouldn't be to concerned about the replacement.No gullwing doors or that epic amg v8 engine.
IMO the sls is quite unique and one of the best cars amg has ever made, the end of an era, grab one whilst you can.
If anything sls prices might go up!

If you can get one, do it ... the days of cars being produced like the SLS are limited.

I did at one point ponder over getting a four door E63 or an estate version because of practicality If you can get one, do it ... the days of cars being produced like the SLS are limited.
Then man maths took over and I decided an SLS is the more practical choice!
I did have a serious think about the last gen C63 because it looks like the last AMG to use the normally aspirated engine

Would anyone recommend main dealers for servicing? I live in London but previously took my soon to be ex car to an independent because the main dealers are 'not very good'.
I think my soon to be newish car will be out of warranty in a few months. Not looking for cheap but looking for good. Is Mercedes Benz world/brooklands any good? A friend takes his c class there and likes them but after experiencing the level of nonchalance at several Bentley service centres I'm not sure which direction to go. I would look at extending the warranty if possible but not sure if it forces me to go somewhere I don't want to

Just had my C63 serviced at Brooklands today. No issues/complaints whatsoever and the service manager came and sat down with me for 10 minutes and went through all the items one by one. Price was fair and everything appears to have been done very competently.I think my soon to be newish car will be out of warranty in a few months. Not looking for cheap but looking for good. Thanks for that BHML. I've been to brooklands a few times just to look around and go on one of their courses but never experienced their service. Had a chat with one of the used sales guys when looking at an E63 but that didn't really go anywhere as the lure of the SLS won! There don't appear to be too many we'll regarded independents but if Brooklands is okay I'm happy to travel to them. I assume they have to maintain the experience cars too so should be able to deal with AMG cars properly
