There's no apparent logic. I was looking at 79SD on eBay a while back which sold quickly for £5k. It' was back on eBay last month with a plate dealer fro £12k and sold (I don't know how much for, but one would assume near 10k.

DVLA auction just gone has had loads of xx11 style plates unsold at £3000...

I guess it's to do with how common those initials are in people's names. W could be White, Warner, Watson -- all common names. xx YE might be less common.

As you've given the letters away it's fairly easy to work out the plate you're after. It's an original issue which adds to the value although the number is first which slightly devalues it.

It's going to be five figures so I would personally start at £8K and see where it goes from there.

A search of DVLA reveals they have never auctioned any "RW" plates at all. Thus the combination of common initials and scarcity is bound to make them expensive.

Don't expect to negotiate too much of a bargain.

I passed my test some 30 years ago, and recently calculated that in those 30 years I have owned 15 cars with an average price of £1400, and depreciation of about £10k in total.

Are you telling me that all the cars I have ever owned are/were worth in total less than one number plate ? If I spent 28K on one car (not likely), I would expect it to last me until I retire in 20 years time.

No it's not worth £28K, £25K or even £3K. IMHO

It would be if it could be resold for the sum paid. And that's what I'm trying to find out. I'd imagine the only people who could give a worthwhile opinion on it would be people involved in the reg. plate trade.
Ah a gamble.

You want it because you want the plate? Or you want it as an investment?

To you. And also, which may be a surprise, some people spend more than £1400 on a car.

You have some odd opinions.

IMHO if you want to speculate on number plates, do so with someone else's initials and not your own.

Cars depreciate.

Decent number plates ..... don't.

Please don't pop up and tell us a £500k Ferrari GTO doesn't depreciate. There are almost none of them, nobody drives them and almost nobody can afford them. We're talking here about a £10k number plate which holds its value versus a £10k car which depreciates like a lead balloon.

I sort of agree with this but with a few additional comments

As an investment it's about as locked in as you can get, could take longer than selling a house or similar to realise the funds, so assume its money spent , then if you need the cash quickly the price to sell will be lower

Also I agree a decent plate can hold value, but be careful on what a decent plate is, exclude from that anything with a prefix or suffix.

The real question is how many people with the initials rw are prepared to spend 25k again on that plate?

Its all about who is looking and when...I took a 3 letter 3 number plate off an old car, expecting to get 500 quid for it, put it on ebay and it did 3700, I was astonished.

Same token, a customer of mine had a plate that he gave 70K for, he hit hard times and sold it back to the dealer he bought it off for 20K.

You must want the plate badly to chuck 25K at it , so another 3 grand isnt a fortune in the scheme of things.

Number plates are not very liquid, can take an age to sell, so if you are likely to need to cash it in quickly in the future, its not somewhere I would park my money

a 1 number 2 letter plate of above average rarity would be worth.
Every single one of my vehicles has an absolutely unique registration. It's difficult to be rarer than that.

Basically, what you're asking is for somebody to predict future values. Anybody who could do that with any accuracy would not be sharing their advice on here. They'd be sitting on their own Caribbean island sipping rum, surrounded by nubile lovelies.
