Turbo silencing feature?
Discussion
Having done some work on my car which has a vag cr tdi engine and involved removing the outlet pipe from the compressor side of the turbo, I noticed it had a weird looking baffle tube inside with some square holes in it.
Do any engine gurus know if this is to help silence the turbo or whether it's just to help reduce the unpleasant (being a diesel) intake noise of the engine? I quite like a bit of turbo noise so would be keen to remove this tube if it is just to quieten the turbo, but would this then adversely effect the tuning of the inlet system?

If it's on the compressor side - i.e. between the turbo and the inlet manifold - I don't see how it can affect the sound of anything. Probably there to help manage the high pressure airflow.
I think it's definitely to do with sound as it looks a fairly typical straight through baffle design. I'm just not exactly sure what type of soundOzzie Osmond said:

Er, that will very much affect the "sound" of the engine. No, not the exhaust note, or the transmitted firing related frequencies, but the spectrum of intake noise is managed and tuned by the addition of such features. You will see a lot of intakes having "dead end" pipes sticking off them these days. They have no net flow in them, but they act as resonators to augment or damp certain frequencies allowing the manufacturer to adjust how their car sounds.Ozzie Osmond said:
