Long delivery dates

A neighbour of mine has just ordered a RR Sport. He's been told it won't be delivered until mid September at the earliest. Clearly this is helpful as it'll be a 64 plate, but still seems a heck of a long time.
Traditionally long delivery dates have been associated with companies such as Morgan (although I'm not sure if this is still the case). However, I'm just a bit surprised that mainstream companies such as Land Rover still have 6 month+ waiting lists.

Why is that surprise? The new RR Sport is in high demand, particularly abroad, so there is 6 month wait. The Evoque was over a year at one point due to high demand post launch
VW quite often have long lead times on certain specs, generally diesel with DSG, where 9 months + isn't unheard of.

I understand why there's such a wait. I'm just surprised why they can't up the production. There's massive talent out there, many of whom are unemployed. Perhaps upping the workforce would lead to greater productivity which would lead onto greater profit. Or am I wearing rose tinted glasses?Roman Moroni said:

Keeping supply a little short means that when you ask the salesman about discount he looks at you a little funny. Less discount = more margin per vehicle. Work smarter not harder and all that lot. It also means that the customer has plenty of time to research breakdown cover. They might even move the build date yet...

JLR are doubling the size of their factory, but it takes time to build the building, get the machines built and installed, doubling production doubles everythings demand ie twice the metal to keep them in supply for the same amount of time

Not to mention their suppliers also need to potentially double their capacity.

When Porsche launched the original Boxster I waited 20 months for it. Two weeks after it arrived some bint drove head on into it. I was going straight ahead and she was turning right at a cross roads - she couldn't understand why she didn't have right of way.. Wasn't too happy.

Or am I wearing rose tinted glasses?Every NMSC (national marketing / sales company) for a manufacturer has to provide the manufacturer with numbers of cars, split by model / spec that it wants guaranteed from their factories - most NMSCs generally get the numbers / split totally wrong forcing re-negotiation with the manufacturer - all the time the customer is st in the middle with a potentially long lead time
Also, in recent years manufacturers can make far more profit from building and supplying vehicles to markets other then the UK, if you can supply a car to a country for double the profit of supplying it to another then its logical the more profitable market will get the car.
When we were "Rip Off Britain" supply from outside UK factories was better because it made financial sense to supply cars to the UK market as much as possible
In my experience one of the worst offenders has been VW - I remember customers being quoted 8 months + for the pile of cr*p that was the Fox, most of their models have long lead times, made worse by the NMSC taking the decision a few years ago to run with minimal physical stock
