HMS Edinburgh D97 closer to being saved?
Discussion
This has been ongoing for a while now, but it would be great to see a Type 42
being preserved.
There are a few articles on the web, but here are the latest for those interested.

Good luck to all involved, but begs the question, why not save a T42 in Portsmouth as a Falkands memorial after loosing two of them in 82,to go with all the other maritime attractions?

Indeed. Not sure one of these languishing in Edinburgh is going to draw in the crowds when they have Brittania anyway.
Portsmouth has the infastructure to set this up with the other attractions and probably the necessary footfall as well.
Smells like a plot to me to get the first ship of the new Scottish Navy for nothing !!
I assume we will get our nuclear subs back post independence as we won't want them being run by a 'foreign' power /
potential enemy ?

I seem to remember some rumour of the British government investigating the option of annexing the base and keeping it as part of Britain .....
Like Gibraltar. Excellent idea!Wasn't Gosport a submarine base ?
Massive difference between Gosport( HMS Dolphin) and Faslane, mainly the Nuke side, PET tanks for nuclear waste,de-contamination, i could go on, but bore you to death
The missiles are kept at RNAD Coulport, a few miles away, the V-Boats will de- loaded there before coming along at Faslane for any significant time.

Also they like to be able to get in and out whilst submerged, to keep everyone guessing. That means a nice deep channel is required.

IIRC back in the day it was deemed that there were only 3 places in the UK capable of being the venue for the Polaris (as it was then) force - Faslane, Falmouth and Milford Haven. All offering close deep water. We can and have operated the Nuclear hunter-killer boats from Devonport and indeed it is the only place that they and the V boats can be refitted but the Trident boats do need a much deeper water to operate from plus the storage facilities for the missile.

Well, take them round to Sizewell; plenty of nuclear stuff there. Put the spent uranium in their reactor and add fresh from the other end. Just needs a jetty...
There you go, the submarine industry saved and all for the price of a jetty, about £2,000. Saves the taxpayer £40Bn
.

(NB - note to self .............Vote for Simpo Two at the next election)

Make it a Sovereign Base Area like Akrotiri; it was mentioned in the press a while ago but everyone including the MoD poopooed it.Gassing Station | Boats, Planes & Trains | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
