Forgetting cars that do hardly any miles but get serviced annually.
Just curious to see what folk on here tend to do. Obviously more frequent changes won't do any harm but go on an American site and 3000 mile intervals are still prevalent which does seem extreme given the quality of modern oils.

I just get it done whenever the service indicator says it needs to be done, or if 2 years pass sooner, then I get it done then. It's what the service schedule says and I figure all the boffins who made and wrote the schedule, know what they're talking about. It's also done by a mechanice I trust and who specialises in PSA cars, so I know he changes all the fluids with the right specifications.
If I had something special, like the Chimera I keep promising myself, then I'd probably do that every year before I started using it again when the weather got nice. As it happens, my current car is a Grand Picasso so can't see the point, when I'll probably get rid of it or something else will break, long before engine wear from old oil ever became a problem.

Drop the oil and change the filter every 2-3000 miles on my Amazon... this works out to an oil change every 6 or 7 months.
Might be overkill but as the car is 44 years old it’s cheap insurance IMO (oil & filter works out to about £25 quid and I do it the lovely job myself).
My girlfriend’s 1998 V70 gets an oil and filter change once a year (about every 8-10 thousand miles and it is a garage job as her car doesn't fit on my ramps (front spoiler catches). Plus, a local garage does the job for about 5 quid more than the cost of the materials so it's hardly worth getting my hands dirty). It’s on circa 175K miles and still going strong.

I believe oil is the cheapest maintenance going, but not so my daughter. When I discovered she had not had an oil change in her little 4X4 Suzuki in 24,000 Kilometers I insisted on doing it. When she saw the oil going in she was upset that I had bought the wrong oil for her car.
I told her it was the right stuff, but she told me it couldn't be, her oil was BLACK, not honey coloured.

I was under the impression the Americans are still big on mineral oils? Hence the short intervals.
For me I will go by the service indicator if something modern, otherwise I try and change annually on other stuff or at 10k (whichever comes first).
My cars get driven a lot so with my BMWs even changing every 15k the oil gets changed at LEAST once a year

Manufactures recommended service intervals are a triumph of marketing over engineering and have nothing to do with preserving the vehicle for as long as possible. They are written to reduce the first three or four years maintenance costs to the lowest possible amount to keep new car buyers and fleet managers happy.
Depending on which one of the JS fleet it is, how its been used and oil quality that I put in last time I serviced it between half and two thirds of the manufacturers recommendations is usually as far as I'll go between changes. The daily diesel on cheap mineral oil gets the most frequent changes, the barge on proper full fat synthetic gets the least.

Not sure what the downside is for modern diesels...Over the past 12 years I’ve run a 120d (>120k miles in 4 years), a 2.2TDCi Mondeo (173k miles in 4 years) and my current DS5 has done 50k in the past 15 months. None have suffered any engine issues despite being serviced every 20k or so. Wouldn’t you expect issues to show up running that mileage?
