E36 M3 6 speed gearbox rebuild
Discussion
Hey, I have an M3 that the sychro has gone in 3rd. I have been told this is a common problem but there is no where that you can have one of there gearboxes rebuilt or worked on. Is this true and am I going to have to buy a 2nd hand replacement? It would be a shame to completely replace the box since it is absolutely fine apart from trying to get it into 3rd at higher revs. Any help or advice would be appreciated.
The parts are not available to rebuild the E36 M3 Evo 6 speed gearbox.
When i had a 1998 M3 Evo mine started jumping out of 3rd gear on the odd occasion and i came up against the same problem as you that the gearbox can't be rebuilt.
Only options are:
1. Buy a low mileage used 6 speed Evo box.
2. Buy a 5 speed 3.0 M3 box which are easier to get hold of & cheaper. You would also need to change the propshaft from the 3.0 as the gearboxes are different lengths.
I managed to buy a 40,000 mile used 6 speed evo box from Moseley motorsport for £500 and cost me £100 to get it fitted. My old box was really notchy also, lower mile one was totally different much better.
