Due to a nasty invasion by a bloody great woodscrew my RRS had to have a costly Scorpio zero tyre fitted earlier today, now whilst waiting the ATS Manager sang the virtues and benefits
of Nitrogen Inflation which after he'd worn me down sufficiently I agreed to have pumped in to said Rangie.

Now my question is after listening to the sales pitch will it do what he says it will……………..confused

1,Rarely need refilling, maybe an initial top up after 3 months.

2,Prevent any water ingression or rim corrosion.

3,Improve road contact and rolling performance.

4 and here's the killer,Improve MPG return by up to 6 miles per gallon.

All that said I thought I'd give it a go as at least the guy had tried with his well versed script……….readit but will it work and has anybody tried it.

Would you dare to put it in your Aston tyres and would it affect the TPMS or anything.

With some considerable long distance hoons planned for this year the MPG benefit does appeal I must admit, but is it hype can anyone tell me.

I'm all ears

Not familiar Ed, but I think they use nitrogen in f1 tyres, so it can't be all that bad!

The AA don't seem convinced of the benefits…

IMO the only benefits are:

Tyre pressure will be more stable in different temperatures.

Tyre will not loose pressure over time as quickly as one inflated with air.

I think the other claimed benefits, improved MPG etc. is total sales hype.

Can you tell us how much it cost?

Well the AA don't seem overly impressed it would seem………frown

But I'll give it a chance and see how it performs, strangely the steering felt lighter after the inflation unless that was just my imagination after the
brain washing I took whilst waiting for the tyre refit.

You ask the costs, well it was worth a try imo at £4.99 for all 4 corners…….thumbup

Go and look at their air guns.. Pretty sure they have just one, I was on good terms with the local kwikfit manager and he said they put it in anyway. Equally you've no idea if they don't. I've no idea who or what to believe so I wouldn't pay for it

So what pressure would you set the tyres at? I have always assumed that manufacturers give a cold tyre pressure so that when the air in them warms up they will then be at the optimum operating pressure but that wouldn't occur with the nitrogen inflation.
ETA Its genuine interest Ed not deriding the fact you have had it done.

Upto 6mpg increase? Garbage IMO.

Given air already contains 78% Nitrogen I'd say its benefits will be very limited at best.

I'd try it if it were free but I wouldn't pay for it.

Jon,

I saw them use a different green pipe and inflation gun that ran to what I believe was a cylinder,my view was slightly obscured from the waiting room but it certainly looked
different from the air lines running to other vehicles.

But I know what for saying mind.

Kev,

Good point and frankly thats scaring me nowyikes, they never mentioned any of that in the hype but there again I suppose I was an easy target after I'd been there that long
in their waiting room I think I'd gone stir crazy…….hehe

Sorry Ed it wasn't my intention to worry you just wondered if they perhaps up the inflation pressure by say 10% or similar to account for the difference.

Less moisture content and certainly stabilises tyre pressure across temperatures. I would never go on a race track without it. I have seen 32 psi become 42 psi on a tyre inflated with air and a 1 - 2 psi differential in tyre inflated with nitrogen. Properly done though wink.

At £4.99 you can't go wrong, but 6MPG smells a little of bullst to me.yes

From a tyre fitter probably right, but when the race team come with their own bottle of nitrogen wink Slightly different.

Nice one Cockers thats made me feel more comfortable with it,strange how it felt lighter for such a large vehicle after the inflation.

Bodes well from your track experience then as I often get sent to SPA………………..for a pint of milk and a tv choice….rolleyes

PS,don't forget your meal choice please.

Every day a school day.. That makes sense, pressure is pressure whether it is air, water, nitrogen or whatever but change the temperature and there you go yes.

Does this mean you will be bringing your own unique brand of hot air to Rockingham Mr tealeaf? wink

I am full of hot air Jeff, but if you want me to throw your luverly V12V around Rockingham we can see who got the most hot air in your tyres biggrin

Nitrogen molecules are larger than those of oxygen, so they leak out less easily. That's about it for road use.
