Looking like a "knob" in a 7......

So once again Top Gear points out that one looks like a "knob" driving a Caterham. Is this just UK local opinion or the usual Top Gear BS to get a rise out of people?
Here (USA), I constantly get people smiling, waving, thumbs up, taking pictures and video, starting conversations with me, etc, the 7 gets lots of positive attention, it is a total kick.
On the other hand, I do feel like a knob whenever I drive a Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc

It's just a glib comment - like saying that only nerds buy Skyline GTRs. The reaction I get from youngsters in their first car is a sort of grudging 'respect ' nod whereas old ladies and young kids smile and wave. Sadly Sevens seem invisible to all attractive young women.Middle aged blokes either tell you they're thinking about buying one (of course you are) or are hell bent on driving their M3 like a nutter to put one in one's place.
Look at the people giving the advice and make your own mind up

I was a big follower of Clarkson in his early years as a journo. His Performance Car column was often laugh out loud funny. He's still quite amusing in writing, but on TV? He at least knows his audience.

Seriously though does anybody look at a 7 driver and think knob? I appreciate this may be the wrong forum to ask that question but not once would I think anybody in their right mind would think that! These cars are fun driven by people with a sense of humour. Surprised May can't see that...
The relatively frequent comments like these on TG about Caterham drivers comes across as an odd contrast here in the U.S., where a few days ago, the latest issue of Road & Track magazine features as a cover story "The 51 Coolest Cars of the Last 50 Years" with Caterham on the list, and in the same week, BBC-America broadcasts the TG episode referenced above. In my experience, U.S. perception of Caterhams is overwhelmingly positive in any form, barring the occasional backwoods Joe-Bob who openly despises any vehicle not tied to Detroit in some way.
Oh FFS - am I the only person on the planet who realises that TG is not the William Woollard Top Gear de nos jours but an entertainment ? If you just sit back and let your inner ten year old run free it's bloody good entertainment and May and Clarkson especially were seriously good journos before the TV gig.
