I'm not a Nectar card holder, but was surprised to fill up the other day (77 quids' worth) and see the cashier swiping his own Nectar card on the back of my purchase. I asked him what he was doing and he just nervously laughed it off.

I know I'm not losing anything so shouldn't be too bothered, but it's a bit cheeky isn't it? Back in the days when I was a garage cashier, I used to get my perks from either nicking an out-of-date Mars bar, or having a frisky fumble with the Manageress, after we'd cashed-up for the night.

Waste not want not, not a great job, not great pay and maybe a little cheeky but people do what they can to get by.

Pretty sure they're not allowed to be doing that - I don't see the problem myself if you don't want the points but it's a pretty big risk (the sack) for little reward.

If its a busy garage he could be making more on the nectar points than he is on his hourly wage! All he needs to do is process a full tank every few minutes to make a reasonable amount.

A supermarket near me fired a till operator for swiping his own miles card when customers didn't. Quite sure they are not allowed to do this.

I'm sure they'll be a system to flag multiple swipes. If he does it once a week and the card isn't in his name he'll be fine. Oh and sticks to cash purchases.

Big deal. Collect them if it bothers you that much!

Exactly, collecting 10,000 points in one petrol station in one day will raise suspicions.

When I was a garage cashier it was the scams all the customers wanted to pull that were most amazing. How times change.

If you are not claiming the points then why not.

Chances are they will be questionned...as who fills up 50+ times per day?

I used to swipe mine with about £50 every day, worked out as a nice lump of M&S food vouchers at christmas smile

Don't see what the problem is myself. It's not like he's stopping the OP from getting his points or anything so it's hardly "theft" as nobody seems to have lost out. OP hasn't, the garage hasn't and Nectar haven't.

A place I used to work at had a scheme in place once where on top of your commission, you got "points" for everthing you sold. At the end of the year, you could use the points to spend on stuff in a catalogue - everything from holidays to haircuts. Part of the fun through the year was working out a way to get extra points.

In retail it is surprising how clear cut the line for theft is, and this certainly crosses it.

I worked for Sainsburys some years ago and they treat it the same as stealing anything else from the shop. There were a few idiots in my store who were sacked for it in the time I was there. Quite rightly, it's theft.
