I'm sure it's probably a blanket statement as are most of these claims.

It said people eating more processed meats in group they studied over 20yrs but they couldn't identify specifically which proteins effected cancer and most people eating more of this kind of food tended to have a poor diet & more likely to smoke.

link in the telegraph. They state anything over 20% of daily intake as protein, particularly from animals is as bad as smoking 20 a day. (looks at his 30% per day target.......erm)

What they actually saw was a correlation between people who ate relatively more protein and mortality. They didn't establish causality at all. Then they jumped to a wild proposition that it was as bad as smoking. Somewhat dubious to say the least. It could be that protein is bad, but it could just as easily be something else in the diet of those people.
