As above, what's the average weight of a 4 wheel car trailer. Need to know so that I can think which car I buy an appropriate tow car.
Thanks
The Tvr weighs 1060KG

Mine is 400 Kg, its an old BJ Clubman with a 1200 Kg max load capacity all up total of 1600 Kg. They don't seem to make it any more unfortunately.

Thanks for the replies so far. So if I buy a car, possibly a Mondeo 140bhp estate (max braked towing 1800kg)that should do the job.
I don't want to go down the 4x4 route as I need a economical motor for my 110 mile daily commute.
What do you think?

how much do you want to spend?

I wouldn't recommend a mondeo, 140 with that weight will be sluggish plus whenever I see a Mondeo tow its always really compressed on the rear suspension.

I would choose a BMW 5 series estate, Ideally 530d, 230 bhp, auto with cruise control. It'll tow all day long. Probably get one for 7-8k. And it'll still do 40 mpg.(and about 28 when towing)

Check with Woodford. I've towed a few of their trailers and they seem light.

I might be wrong here, but shouldn't the max weight of the tow car be more than the permissable weight of the trailer and load?

So if your trailer is plated to 2000kg's, then the car needs to be able to do more than that?

I've towed 900kg and 1300kg with a mk3 Mondeo TDCI 130. It coped admirably- a fine tow car.

I used a Brian James Clubman 1350 which weighs 350kg and has a 1000kg payload.

I used to tow 1600kg with my 115bhp Mondeo and it was a fantastic tow car once it got moving, the downside was it being fwd it was a pig to pull away with, especially in the wet. I had to out it in the end as it wouldn't get up a gravelly drive on a steep slope at my wife's stables with the trailer and a ton of hay on it.

That tells you nothing about how good or bad a tow car it is, it only tells you that the trailer's nose weight was way off.

That's strange as they have airbags on the back suspension to level the car out no matter what weight is in the back.

You are wrong on both counts.

Gross train weight minus Gross vehicle weight cannot be less than the plated weight of the trailer. Hence why some down plate.

Depends on what year Mondeo!! I had an 03 plate and that shape definately didnt have airbags!! It towed very well mind (130version) sat with traffic no problem and was reasonable on fuel too...

I have thought a lot about the question of what I would use if I didn't have my old Range Rover p38, I think an Smax or newer model Galaxy would probably do the job nicely but there so big its not really much a downsizing from a 4x4.

For reference with only a bit over 1500Kg behind the Range it makes for a very relaxed towing experience.

OP I think you are like me in that borderline area where the car is a bit wide/long and a bit to heavy for the little lightweight trailers, the big trailers will be van/4x4 jobs so you're chasing those in between like my old BJ Clubman for which they don't seem to have an equivalent now.

My 03 plate TDCi estate did have airbags, it was incredibly stable towing and I even had over 2 tons behind it one day and you could hardly feel it.
