Any technique or tricks of the trade to buying Reg.No.?

A dealer is advertising a reg number my grandfather had for years from the 1950's up to late '80's - I rather fancy it, even though I have never been a fan of private reg numbers. I've never bought one before, never even considered one...

So are there any tips or tricks of the trade to buying reg numbers I should know about before approaching the dealer?

are there any traps to avoid?

Are you prepared to pay that much?


Whatever you do... don't tell the dealer "OMG!!! My Grandad had that number plate... I love it so much... it means the world to me....."

£4000. I like the plate, but I don't like it as much as £4000. £1500 maybe. I don't think it's particularly distinctive.

So what's the sequence? And what are the letters? i.e. how many of each?

One good approach is to look at DVLA past auction search and see what similar numbers went for at auction - remembering you have to add about 25% additional costs above the hammer price (they don't include VAT etc).

When buying my plate it was advertised by two different companies. I kept phoning each one up saying there other had offered a lower price. Did this a few times and managed to get quite abit off.
