Longestdrive in Australia

Hi

I am the organiser for the Longestdrive which does longdistance driving (without speeding - not a Gumball sort of thing) in a modified Porsche Cayenne - we are about to our latest challenge - the Big Loop of Oz...

Well, good luck! Keep us updated - that is going to be one interesting trek! I did a good few miles in W.A, had a great time, surely the rest of the country will be just as good.

I'd love to do a proper road trip in Canada!

Good effort! We had an XF wagon when I was a kid, I remember occasionally hitting my head on the roof thanks to the bounciest back seat ever put in a car. 6-seater with the front bench as well.

We did it the other way back in 2000 and we went the long way in a britz rental 4x4, Perth to Cairns, by going up western aus to Darwin then down through the middle to Adelaide and then around the bottom to Melbourne, Canberra Sydney then up the east coast, Brisbane and finally Cairns.

Had some pretty weird experiences such as the swarm of sunbathing locusts on the road and the miles and miles of butterfly swarm that clogged up the windscreen wipers, the giant bug which when it went splat covered half the windscreen in bug guts, not to mention the bird that cracked the windscreen and the wallaby that bounced off the roo bars.

How long are you expecting it to take?

I have never thought of driving around the country only across it i.e. Sydney to Perth. I imagine you will be doing a good bit of off roading to stay near the coast particularly in WA.

We have been planning a major charity link up but it fell through due to internal 'politics' in the relationship ... We will however have a major charity on board for the North South challenge. You can read about the challenge on our website (can't provide a link on this forum)

About 8 days... we will follow highway #1 which is nothing more than a dirt track in certain places. We were actually going to go the extremities (North- South etc) but delays in transport and getting the car cleared in Oz plus one crew member unable to travel to Oz, meant that we had to streamline the route. Also getting to Cape York (the northern bit) was neigh on impossible due to flooding.

Here is the route logged into the laptop. I am involved in preparing the various routes depending of the local conditions. Initially we wanted to go as close to the coast without backtracking, then the extremities and now solely hihgway #1
