Monitor problems?????

Hi!!

Computer numpty here!!

I have a feeling my monitor may be on its way out or has developed a fault. I am calling on the mighty PH knowledge to help me out.

As from yesterday there is a very bright spot that has appeared on the right hand side (as I look at it) about halfway down. This is circled by an apparantly darker shadow. It is only visible on a white/light background.

The monitor is 2 years old and supplied with my Dell PC.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Could be faulty but should not happen to a two year old monitor. Do you have a speaker right next to the screen at all? If so it may not be magnetically shielded which causes 'banding' or strange areas on the display down the sides of the screen.....move it away and degaus.

Yes, I have a speaker next to the screen, but it has always been there and have never had this before?

It doesnt happen straight away....builds up over time, so worth a try. If not then it would have to be the monitor itself im afraid.

Cheers, I will move the speaker and perhaps the other one from the other side. Would a modem cause problems? I ask as my modem is next to the other side of the monitor with the other speaker next to it.

If it's a two year old Dell monitor isn't it still under warranty? All our iiyama monitors at work come with a three year warranty...

In any case, have you tried "de-gaussing"? This might clear up the problem.

Use the menu on your monitor to find the degauss option, choose it, there'll be a clunk and the picture will go all wobbly..

The image should then return to normal, and if the degauss is capable of fixing the problem, the spot should have gone..

The degauss icon on the monitor's menu will probably look like a U shaped magnet.

I have no 'U shaped la de dah' that I can see. I am completly unable to de gausee.

Where would the icon be?? On my monitor display?

I find that yelling and cursing at my monitor tends to fix it sometimes.

You should have some buttons on your monitor that allow you to get into a menu of some form...

Tell you what, what type of monitor is it? We might be able to help a bit more with those details... (BTW it's not a TFT/LCD is it?)

Zetec - you will notice in my first post I said to move the speaker and degaus.....that was what I was taking about!!

What a good post!
Only this afternoon I noticed a green 'stain' creeping up from the bottom lefthand corner of my monitor. Hit degauss, and it disappeared.
