Crumpets / pikelets

One for the Northerners.

Now that I live amongst the soft shandy drinking sarfeners* it is impossible to get pikelets unless make a special trip somewhere.

Which stores sell them? I've tried making my own and results so far a bit variable. Still perservering.

Morrisons down our way don't, nor Asda. Do they stock them oop north?

Sainsbo's, Tesco, Waitrose look at you as if you've just farted. M&S used to do them but no longer.

• * Pikelets are the same recipe as crumpets but made without the ring so they spread out and are thinner.

Don't get confused with various types of pancakes eg Scotch/ Welsh etc.

I've been faced with similar problems having been bought up on pikelets as a youngster.
I've overcome this problem by buying crumpets, then putting them in a freezer bag and then either placing them under a heavy object overnight or sitting on them for about 1/2 hour (Coronation Street is an ideal length)?
This results in the familiar spread.
I once tried hitting them with a heavy object liked a rubber mallet but I made the mistake of putting them on a glass coffee table first and the results were not as expected although my Wife said I should have realised (or something like that)

M&S now sell pikelets! At least they do up here in Leeds. Otherwise I stock up every time I pass a Betty's.

Never have any trouble finding them in High Wycombe. Another Northerner living amongst shandy drinkers too. Hii.

M&S Simply Food at our local garage sells them.

I was brought up on crumpets as a lad (oop north) - we did call them pikelets though! I like the big thick ones better anyway.

Mission accomplished.

Stocked up on Buttermilk pikelets at M&S Rotherham Parkgate. Now to fill up with slightly less ridiculously priced diesel at Morrisons.

Then escape...



btw was here anyway even I'm not daft enough for a 300 mile round trip just for pikelets.

Pikelets and crumpets are the same thing just given different names depending upon where you are in the country.
i've always known then as Pikelets, black country born and bred, but have only ever seen them titled as crumpets in Morrisons and Tescos.
BTW, they are pretty good with Marmite

Well after I had posted what I perceived to be the difference between them it was interesting to read on the M&S packaging exactly the same explanation that I had previously posted.

So imo you are essentially flat out wrong. Sorry.

Guess it will be an agree to disagree moment with the devil in the detail due to local peculiarities.

I'm with FiF on this, everywhere I've lived they've been two different things. Pikelet being like a thin crumpet basically, about the same in height as a Scotch pancake.

Store bought crumpets are too stodgy now for some reason, I don't remember them being like this when I were a lad Pikelets much better choice nowadays.

I'm in agreement and thy are effectively a crumpet pancake. I made some a few months ago as they are quite easy to make. Good for a Sunday afternoon.

Not been able to find them anywhere here (Manchester) for donkeys years. I resorted to making my own in the end.

They are lovely things and my wife (Welsh) is a convert. Easier to make than crumpets as well

Sounds to me like a Pikelet is a northern version of a Drop Scone, however google suggests drop scone is the same as Scotch pancake, which you say isn't a pikelet? Recipe's look the same though.

You're making me want crumpets now, best with butter and a sprinkling of salt.
